Özet
11 ABSTRACT Leather industry is one of the biggest industries both in the world and in Turkey. In Turkey, tanneries have been collected in the organized sites in recent years with respect to prevent the tannery- originated pollution. Menemen organized leather industrial site is one of the biggest industrial sites. There are about 200 tanneries in the site. Organized site has some economical benefits and on the other hand environmental pollution control is more effective in the sites. Wastewater and solid wastes, originating from the tanneries cause some problems. Wastewaters can be classified in two categories; chromium and sulphide wastes. Separate treatment of these wastes increases the treatment efficiency and some valuable materials such as chromium can be recovered. Chromium is commonly used in the tanning process. It is an important source of contamination due to the large volume of exhausted liquid discharge and sludges produced. Chromium, that is come to the treatment plant is settled and seperated from the wastewater as Cr (OH) 3 by chemical precipitation. This chromium can be recovered by different techniques and can be reused in tanning process as tanning agent or it can be sold other industries where there is a demand for chrome ore. The purpose of the thesis was the comparison of chromium recovery techniques. Recovery techniques were introduced and exemined with the experimental studies. Daily production of the chromium sludge in the treatment plant was determined and chromium that can be recovered from this sludge was calculated. In this thesis, samples were taken from the chromium sedimentation tank located in the treatment plant of Menemen Organized Leather Industrial Site. Experiments were done on these samples.

In the third chapter chromium recovery methods were introduced. Experimental studies and results, economical analysis were given in the fourth chapter. Comparison of the methods and the conclusion were given in the final chapter.
