ABSTRACT This research study stems from the opinion that, there is a need for those individuals and parties who use the services of the Turkish construction industry, both building and civil engineering, and those that are engaged in one or other facets of it, to be involved with social implications of the problem of post- contractual changes, as well as technical. This study therefore attempts to look at a wide range of aspects of the project performance (in client terms), from the point of view of a socio-technical approach, with special regard to post- contractual changes and the interrelatedness of the social system with project performance. Defined as changes to design after the letting of contracts, changes have been one of the major causes of poor cost and time performance, reportedly. In the literature (studies in this area were all foreign), previous approaches to the problem had mainly concentrated upon the potential technical solutions. Within the context of this study, both technical and social systems of a project were considered to influence the incidence of changes. The investigation mainly sought to determine the influence of interpersonal working relationships upon the incidence and effects of changes. Reviewing the literature about the research objectives, it was found that, studies in this area were all foreign. However, the premise of this study was to test or investigate these previous findings through the Turkish Building Industry, in the research process. Meanwhile, in the research process, it was very hard to hold the contextual variables constant due to the lack of standardization of contract types and formal procedures in our Industry. The technical system was found to be handicapped from the changes point of view, and urgent steps should be taken. The deficiency in the technical system, was tried to be supported by the social system, however, most of the time, it caused potential prejudice on the members and this affected the relationships and performance of projects in a negative way. The technical and social aspects and backgrounds of the changes were given in the literature review. A case study strategy was used, because, this enabled to search the variation phenomena within its whole context. Instead of hypothesis, propositions were set to investigate, as the study was a qualitative one. Interviews, content analysis and the Fundemantel Interpersonal Relationships Orientation - Behaviour (FIRO-B) Inventory were used, in order to gain access to the necessary social and technical data. The results were presented as intra-case and cross-case analysis, and conclusions were made. After summarizing the conclusions, recommendations for industry practice were given.
