Abstract: In this work, equilibrium swelling ratio of ionic and non-ionic polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels in water and in aqueous NaCl solutions ranging in concentration from 10"5 M to 1 M was studied. 2-acrylamido -2- methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) was used as the ionic comonomer in the gel synthesis. Hydrogels were prepared by free- radical crosslinking copolymerization of aqueous solutions containing AMPS of varying concentration between 0 and 80 mol %, acrylamide (AAm), N,N' - methylenbisacrylamide (BAAm) as the crosslinker and ammonium persulfat (APS) / N,N,N',N' -tetra methylethylenediamine (TEMED) as the initiator system. The weight swelling ratios qw of hydrogels were measured and the volume swelling ratio qv was calculated from qw. Experimental results showed that the volume swelling ratio of hydrogels increases, as the amount of AMPS used in the gel synthesis increases, but it decreases as the NaCl concentration in solution increases. However, volume swelling ratio of non- ionic gels is independent on the salt concentration in the outer solution. The number of repead units between two crosslink points in the hydrogels N was calculated from the swelling ratio of hydrogels in water and this value was compared with that calculated from the amount of the crosslinker used in the gel synthesis Nchem. Calculation results indicate that about 96 % of the crosslinker BAAm was used in cyclization. Experimental swelling data of hydrogels in water and in aqueous salt solutions were compared with the prediction of the Flory - Huggins theory of swelling equilibrium. Comparison results showed relatively good agreement between theory and experiment.
