NITRURASYON ve NITEMPERLEME ABSTRACT // is required that mating surfaces of steel made machine parts should have high surfaces hardness against wear. There are several methods for obtaininig better surface hardness for steel materials which are subjeced to wear. Nitriding and induction hardening are the most common methods on surface hardening in this thesis study, surface hardening methods by the processes of nitriding and nitetempering which is becoming recently popular methods in industry are examined. Nitriding : It is a heat treatment method which is applied at a temperature range of 520 -580 °C Nitrogen is introduced into steel surfaces in liguid or gas medium and later on those nitrogen atoms are diffused into steel. Diffusion thickness is directly proportional with applied temperature. Nitrogen atoms are combined with alloying elements such as : V, Cr, Al, Mo, to form hard nitrides. These hard nitrides produce high surface hardness for nitemper process, surface hardness is increased by introducing carbon and nitrogen into steel surface at a temperature of about 570 °C Nitempering is very similar to nitriding process and qeguiring short cycle time is a big advantage over nitriding. In the part of theory of this thesis study, nitriding and nitempering methods are introduced. This two methods are applied to medium carbon steels and hot worked tool steels separately. The effects of heat treatment conditions on depth of hardness and maximum hardnesss value are determined. In the experimental of this thesis study current industrial applications have especially been prefer ed and hot worked tool steels and plastic forming die sets operated under 300-350 °C have been chosen as test specimenres. Those parts which are going to be applied special heat treatments in atmosphere controlled ovens, are subjected to metallographic examination and microhardness scanning processes and the effects of different heat treatments on physical properties are examined.
