Özet
Modernizmden günümüze fotoğrafta otoportre aracılığı ile cinsiyet, ırk, kimlik kavramlarını kurcalayan, ötekileştirilen bireylerin mücadelesinde bu kavramları istikrarsızlaştırma yoluna giden öncü sanatçıların eserleri ve fotoğrafta kuir zemine dair açtıkları stratejik yollar ve çağdaş ardıllarının benzer eksendeki örnekleri ele alınmıştır. Kuir, cinsiyet ve cinsellik ile alakalıdır ancak; yalnızca bu politikalar bağlamında kalmaz. Cinsiyet, ırk, kimlik, sakatlık gibi alanlarda feminizm ve aktivizmle önemli bağlantılar kuran, normatif olanın nasıl tesis edildiğine dair sorgulayıcı ve eleştirel bir yöntem olarak varoluşunu sürdürmektedir. Sanatçıların kuir kuramı beraberliğinde ilerleyen, görsel temsil sistemindeki alışkanlıkları altüst eder nitelikteki fotoğrafları, atanmış cinsiyet, kimlik ve ırk politikalarını silikleştirirken kamusal ve özel alanın sınırlarının ve“doğal”veya“gerçek”olarak kurgulanan yapıların stratejik bir sorgulamasını yapmaktadır. Batı ekseninde ilerleyen pratiklerin temel alındığı ideolojik görüşü sorunsallaştıran sanatçıların söylemlerinden yola çıkılarak, Orta Doğu, Afrika ve Uzak Doğu kültürlerindeki eleştirel ifade biçimlerinin nasıl oluştuğuna, performativite bağlamındaki uygulamaların nasıl tasarlandığına, ırk siyasetinin görsel mirasının nasıl dekolonyalist bir tavırla ele alındığına, dijital manipülasyonların hangi yollarla kuir birer eyleme dönüştüğüne dair metinler ve fotoğraf örnekleri sunulmuştur. Bu tez çalışmasında, fotografik örneklerle otoportrenin bir direniş alanına dönüşebilmesinin kuir kuramı ile kurduğu bağlantılarının sunulması, kategorileşmenin ve merkezileşmenin bozguna uğratılmasına dair argümanlar ortaya koyması ve otoportrenin yalnızca sanatçının kendi deneyimlerini gösterir biçimde değil evrensel nitelikte bir görünürlüğe işaret ettiğinin vurgulanması amaçlanmıştır.

From modernism to the present day, the leading artists who are tampering with the concepts of gender, race, and identity through self-portraits, are destabilizing these concepts and the struggle of marginalized individuals has been discussed. The strategic ways they opened up the queer ground in photography have been with the works of their contemporary successors on a similar axis. Queer is related to gender and sexuality but, it is not just in the context of these policies. It exists as a questioning and critical method of how the normative is being established, and is associated with feminism and activism in fields such as gender, race, identity and disability. Within the context of queer theory, the artists' photographs, which subvert the recurrent themes in the visual representation system, make a strategic questioning of the limits of public and private space. The compositions are constructed as“natural”or“real”, while making gender, identity and race politics indeterminate. Discourses of the artists who problematize the ideological view on which the Western axis is based, and how critical expressions in the Middle East, Africa and Far East cultures are formed, are discussed. It has been seen how the practices within the context of performativity are designed, how the visual legacy of race politics is handled in a decolonialist manner, and in which ways digital manipulations are turned into a queer action, have been presented in texts and photographs. In this dissertation, it is aimed to explore and highlight the transformation of the self-portrait into a field of resistance, through photographic examples. Probing the connections the self-portrait makes with queer theory, it is pointed to reveal arguments for the defeat of categorization and centralization, and to emphasize that the self-portrait marks a universal visibility, not only the artist's own experiences.
