This thesis intends to examine the concept of artificial consciousness in Richard Powers' novel Galatea 2.2 (1995), Alex Garland's cinema film Ex Machina (2014) and HBO's Westworld TV Series Season One (2016). It focuses on developing consciousness in machines and humanoids in these fictional works while analyzing the representations of the conscious machines and humanoids by close reading of the novel analyzing the film, and the series. This thesis consists of four parts. The first two parts provide information on artificial intelligence, then on artificial consciousness as a subbranch of AI Then the third part explores how the machines and humanoids gain consciousness in the narrative of the storylines. Part four studies the gendered machines and humanoids who resist to their male creators, and it also explores gender, sexuality, and race in these three fictional texts.
