Özet (Çeviri)

This study attempts to explore the underlying factors of voting intentions of young people of Turkish origin in the Dutch parliamentary elections. A range of theories was reviewed and qualitative interviews were conducted. The theories in question are rational voting, reasoned action, civic voluntarism, political socialization and emotional voting theory. Political cynicism was used to supplement the explanatory power in the eclectic approach of this research. The first three theories are based on the assumption of the 'rational behavior'. Political socialization signifies the influence of various actors on the informants' orientations. The emotions theory addresses the role of affect in human behavior. As for political cynicism, the basic idea is that political participation diminishes as citizens consider political actors immoral and incompetent. The qualitative understanding provided space for exploring subjective experiences and the meaning the informants attach to those. Data were collected through conducting in depth interviews with twenty Turkish-Dutch adolescents ranging from 15 to 17 years. A content analysis was carried out after transcription of interviews. The transcripts were first cut into units of data and then placed in appropriate folders. After formulating an initial examination regarding a particular case within each code, all the other cases within the same code were studied. If the initial explanation did not explain the case, it was reformulated. The initial examination was revised or completely changed if those compared cases refuted the initial explanation. The research group is equally divided between those who intended to vote and those who did not intend to do so. Political knowledge appeared as the most important reason behind having the intention to participate in the elections. Most of the informants appeared to be poorly informed on Dutch politics, which disaffects other stimulating factors: having a political ideology, having a party preference, having political interest, having a sense of political efficacy. Those supporting an ideology and/or a party, being interested in politics and feeling political efficacy, on the other hand, are predisposed to vote in the next election and are more inclined to seek further political knowledge. Actors socializing the individuals appear to have significant impact on their voting intentions. Yet the research group of this study is undersupplied in this regard.
