The synthesis of two internal aryl acetylene derivatives (R-C6H4-CeC-C6H4-R; R= 3-C02CH3 or 4-C02CH3) was accomplished using Pd catalyzed Heck reactions. Reaction of the internal alkynes with B2Pin2 in the presence of a Pt catalyst yielded the cisbis(boryl)alkene derivatives in excellent yield. The cis-bis(boryl)alkene derivatives were investigated as precursors to tetra(carboxyphenyl)alkenes via double Suzuki coupling reactions. Reactions were studied that examined variation in catalyst (cis-[PdClı(dppf), Pd(0Ac)2), base (KOH, KOAc), refluxing solvent (DMSO, DMF), aryl halide (I-C6H4-R, Br-C6H4-R; where R= 3- or 4-C02CH3), and duration of reflux (1-25 days). All reactions conditions resulted in the formation of tris(carboxyphenyl)alkene products, with none of the reactions leading to the desired tetra(carboxyphenyl)alkene products. Anhydrous reaction conditions resulted in the selective formation of tris(carboxyphenyl)(BPin)alkene products.
