Nowadays, Additive Manufacturing is rapidly becoming a necessary technology and needs to be developed in order to perform efficient and reliable production of the metallic parts with extremely complex shape. There are some various examples in the industry that can be listed as Selective Laser Sintering, Laser Beam Welding and Selective Laser Melting. On the other hand, the primary goal of this work is to make a research about the working principle and importance of the Selective Laser Melting in the industry. Furthermore, the most suitable metallic powder types are investigated. Intrinsically, each metallic powder has different particles in terms of their size and shape and that fact means that particle size and shape distribution of each powders are different. Metallic powders can also be divided into three such as gas atomized powders, plasma atomized powders and water atomized powders in terms of the way that they are produced. According to nature of these powder types, they have different morphology and they have different effects on the quality of the final part. In order to measure the particle size and shape distribution, some alternative methods are exploited such as Scanning Electron Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope and Morphologi 4 machine. Moreover, in this research Mophologi 4 which is an innovative device is utilized for characterizing particle shape and size distribution. Another important parameter that affects quality of the manufactured part on the SLM (Selective Laser Melting) machine is the powder's tendency to flow (flowability). FT4 Rheology machine is also chosen to assign the flowability values of the different type of metallic powders in terms of different methodologies such as Cubic Bulk Density and Basic Flowability Energy among all techniques for the flowability determination of the powders such as Carney Funnel, Hall Flowmeter, Angle of Repose etc. It must also be noted that there is a great relationship between particle morphology (particle size and shape distribution) and flowability and that fact must be proved in this research. Previous researches show that powders having particles with greater size and more spherical (regular) shape have higher flowability values and in this case higher powder bed density is obtained and higher strength values are reached for a given volume. In order words, the quality of the produced part becomes higher. Moreover, the most suitable powder types are chosen in terms of considering minimum required quality of the product and the economic issues of the process. That fact also expresses the importance of the selection of the convenient powder type for SLM machining. Therefore, some cost related analysis should also be carried out during the powder selection stage before production of the parts.
