Work stress has many antecedents, including emotional labor demands. This study investigates the relationship between emotional labor demands and work stress by looking at the moderating role of employees' goal orientations (learning, performance-prove, performance-avoid) and job autonomy. Looking at an individual characteristic (goal orientation) and a job characteristic (job autonomy), this paper aimed to reveal main and interaction effects of individual differences and job characteristics. An online survey study with full-time working adults (N = 108) from Turkey was conducted to investigate the proposed effects between variables. The results of the study revealed that emotional labor demands have a significant positive effect on work stress. Furthermore, performance-avoid goal orientation was found to strengthen the positive relationship between emotional labor demands and work stress. Moreover, additional analyses showed that performance-prove goal orientation also showed a positive effect on the relationship between emotional labor demands and work stress. Lastly, job autonomy was found to enhance the positive effect of the performance-avoid goal orientation on the positive relationship between emotional labor demands and work stress. The paper concludes with implications of current findings for the field and possible future research suggestions for the literature.
