The concept of the Southern Gas Corridor has developed by the EU in 2008 to address the increasing energy security concerns. When the original Nabucco project has shelved, the competition of TAP and Nabucco West commenced to carry the Azerbaijani gas to Europe. We used the concept of EU catalytic state to analyze this process, in which the EU perceived as a promoter, facilitator and catalyzer of strategic projects. We have tried to find out how the catalytic state materialized during this competition and what does this process mean for the EU Energy Security and the EU catalytic state. For this purpose, in our conceptual chapter we have talked about what the EU Catalytic State is, along with a literature review on this subject. Later in our empirical chapter we have put forward the relevant data from the EU, governmental actors and private actors, about the competition process. Finally in our discussion chapter we have evaluated the findings of this chapter through the lens of our concept. The EU had used its catalytic power tremendously for the promotion of the Nabucco project. However, when the project had shelved and a rescaled version of it, Nabucco West entered into competition with TAP, the catalytic state became less visible. Treasury mechanisms were still in use, however instruments of nodality were less in use. Nonetheless, the Catalytic State had worked well in creating a trust environment which encourage actors to convene around a common purpose and form coalitions. EU catalytic state was successful to mobilize private capital by its treasury mechanisms, to be invested in its strategic projects. We claimed that the failure of Nabucco West constituted a failure also for the EU, because it was representing EU's strategic objectives in the energy domain. We concluded that the EU Catalytic State does not function well enough when the championed projects contradicts with member state interests and when there is equal support for the competing projects.
