This thesis argues that in order to build sustainability, it is foremost important that the relationships of power (politics) in a system are stable and sustainable in themselves. Therefore, it urges to look unto the case of İstanbul, which has had a recent change in its political regime, where the balance between holders of power has further become more fragile: İstanbul, by such political shift, has also created a tension between the collaborative attitude towards the actions of the local and central government. As the concept of sustainability itself requires the participation by different layers of decision-making and inclusivity, within this arena of politics, the struggle towards building sustainability is further questioned; the attempts that promote it, the institutions, or the projects towards or against are to be put under observation. In the scope of this research, it is sought if the concept of sustainability is to remain a vague inquiry or whether it is or it would be integrated into İstanbul' s future agenda.
