Despite the fact that technological development in terms of methods and means of warfare has boosted their destructive impact on the field, the concern of the environmental devastation in times of non-international armed conflict is still underestimated and overlooked by the international community. The truth is that not only civilians are victims of armed conflicts but also the environment. Both States and non-state armed groups are directly and indirectly causing severe environmental damage in times of internal armed conflicts. In the context of the legal framework, a successful environmental protection must not only be principled but also practical by comprehensive mechanisms and certain restrictions. The aim of this dissertation is to examine environmental protection in times of non-international armed conflict by International Humanitarian Law. In order to understand to what extent the natural environment is protected, treaty rules and customary rules of the law of armed conflict will be analysed in different chapters. In addition to this, decisions of the international courts and tribunals, State practice will also be examined so as to gather environmental information about the adequacy of the legal framework
