Özet (Çeviri)
Objective: Even though previous studies find a relation between self-esteem and intellectual disability and also an association between self-esteem and expressed emotion; the link between self-esteem and maternal expressed emotion in intellectually disabled children has not been studied. Present study aimed to study the relation between selfesteem and maternal expressed emotion (criticism) in children with intellectual disability. As a secondary aim, possible confounders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and maternal mental well-being (depression and anxiety), are checked whether there is a relation between them and self-esteem in intellectually disabled children. Method: This study is a secondary analysis of the study“The Croydon Assessment of Learning Study: Prevalence and educational identification of mild mental retardation”which; they were estimated the prevalence of low IQ in children with mild mental retardation (MMR) and identification of special educational needs and schooling of children with mild intellectual disability. Self-esteem is measured by Warr and Jackson (1983) Self-esteem scale, intellectual disability is measured by WISC-III UK and criticism dimension of maternal expressed emotion is gathered by“Child Rearing Scale”that is developed by the researchers in the main study. All of the associations were tested by regression analysis in IBM SPSS Statistics 24. Results: The results showed there isn't any significant relation between self-esteem and maternal expressed emotion (criticism) in children with intellectual disability. Moreover, significant association between self-esteem and any possible confounders (ADHD and maternal mental well-being) wasn't found. Conclusion: Based on the findings, this study should be replicated by taking into account the limitations to increase the awareness of people, especially mothers, on the association between self-esteem and criticism in intellectually disabled children.
