In this dissertation, I will identify the sovereignty of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, analyze the Order's practice of sovereignty, and explain how the Order fits in the international system. To do so, this dissertation will answer questions; How is sovereignty practiced? How is it produced? What is the meaning of sovereignty in contemporary politics? Furthermore, this dissertation will explain the history of the Order, and its acquisition and use of sovereignty. Along with the Order's history and its sovereignty, the place of sovereignty within contemporary politics will further be discussed and brought about arguments over its role.
