There is a lack of studies which examine current orientation that is important for maintaining everyday activities in healthy older subjects. The purpose of this study is to provide information about the possible causes of age-related impaired current orientation by using the Current Orientation Test (COT). Fifteen subjects aged between 18 and 25 years were compared with fifteen older subjects whose ages were 65 and over. The older group showed less consistency of ordering fifteen everyday events and they took longer to sequence them in temporal order in COT. Although regression analysis indicated the opposite effect, the correlation results showed that episodic memory and executive functions were responsible for impaired COT which also suggested that COT might provide a valid measurement for detecting impairments of those two cognitive functions. The practical implications of the findings are discussed in the conclusion in terms of the benefit for early diagnosis of dementia.
