Background: Given the prevalent nature of health problems, overweight, obesity, long-term diseases and negative eating habits in the society, a university context is most significant for a research to understand students' understanding of what constitutes healthy diet. While it is widely believed that there are many barriers to healthy diet, it is important to investigate how students understand it and the ways in which their knowledge and practices relate to existing UK guidelines. In order to achieve this, this research investigates the subjective and environmental factors that impact on choice of healthy diet as well as the interaction between them. Aim: The aim of this research is to investigate how students at Brunel University lead a healthy lifestyle, what they understand as healthy foods and consider how this relates to the national guidelines. Methods: Using the qualitative method and phenomenological approach, which allows investigating the meanings people attribute to different phenomena, this research utilised semi-structured interviews with 15 participants to understand students' understanding of healthy diet. It also involved relevant literature review, which has been used to analyse the interview findings. Results: It has been found out that students are fairly aware of the requirements of healthy diet. However, their problems in this respect revolve around financial issues, availability of healthy food and limited choices. There is a consensus that these problems are overwhelmingly dominant. Besides, existing guidelines are not trusted, and are said to be incompatible with students' budget. Conclusions: There is an increase in student consciousness in relation to healthy food. This change, which has not been detected by previous research, could be more widespread.
