A healthy diet is critical to a vibrant and long life. However, increasing evidence has demonstrated that our diets are not healthy as should be expected. Hypertension, diabetes, obesity and other health conditions which are closely related to diet are major health challenges on a global scale. Estimates have shown that obesity alone is responsible for about three million deaths every year and more than US$2 trillion in medical costs (Mozaffarian et al., 2014). This current study assesses how the implementation of a fat-tax policy affects rates of obesity. It will focus on the health and economic aspects of the enforcement of a fat-tax. The enforcement of the policy is geared toward ensuring that only healthy diets are consumed. However, the effectiveness of such a policy has been questioned because cases of diet-related diseases are still being reported. In this paper, the details of introducing a fat-tax as a way of reducing obesity will be reviewed. The paper will evaluate the rationale behind the enforcement of a fat-tax to determine whether it is the most effective way of reducing obesity. The first section will explain the background to the study and summarize the research topic and the motive for the study. Next the methods which were used for the research will be described. These methods were used for the collection of the necessary data and information to facilitate the testing of the hypothesis. After the methodology section, there will be an analysis and discussion section where different theories and arguments will be reviewed in relation to the economic and health considerations of implementing a fat-tax policy. The paper will conclude by addressing the limitations of the study and summarizing the major points. Some useful recommendations for further study based on the major findings will be given.
