The main purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the impact of the power struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran on the effectiveness of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The dissertation comprises of three main sections; respectively, a retrospective analysis of the historical background of OIC by referring the constitutive principles of the organisation, the investigation of the foreign policy dynamics of Saudi Arabia and Iran and the analysis of the recent policy actions of these states over the operations of OIC. In this light, a realist framework was operated to explain the power struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran by using both foreign policy and content analysis methods. The major findings of this dissertation demonstrate that since its establishment the OIC has been exploiting as foreign policy tools by the chief rivals of the Middle East motivated by power. As a result, the effectiveness of OIC having indeed high institutional potential and being the second largest international organisation of the world, has weakened. Regardless of the formal declarations of the charter prioritising a value-laden discourse, the OIC has fallen short of fulfilling its duties. Also, the most prominent reason is that the self-interest of these states that overshadowed the operations of OIC which claims to be the collective voice of Muslims by advocating the Islamic causes all around the world.
