Özet
Bu tez, Bruce Sterling tarafından kategorize edilen Slipstream ve Cyberpunk romanlarının tür tiplendirmesini inceleyerek, genellikle yüksek ve popüler kurgunun çöküşü olarak adlandırılan çağdaş kurgunun melezliği sorununa odaklanmaktadır. Bruce Sterling'in katı ayrımı, Slipstream Romanlarının bilim kurgu olmadığı, Cyberpunk romanlarının özünde Bilim Kurgu olduğudur. Fakat, bu tezin asıl argümanı, yalnızca reklam kategorileri için yeterince kullanılabilecek romanların tipleştirilmesinde akışkanlık üreten meta sistemine entegre edilen tipleştirme eylemidir. Bu eylem, ozetle, Slipstream olarak Thomas Pynchon'ın Erken Romanları ve Cyberpunk türünü temsil eden William Gibson'ın Sprawl Üçlemesi okunarak üç adımda gösterilir. This thesis focuses on the problem of hybridity of contemporary fiction that is usually referred to as the breakdown of high and pop-fiction through examining the genre typification of Slipstream and Cyberpunk novels that had been categorized by Bruce Sterling. Bruce Sterling's rigid boundary is Science Fiction that Slipstream Novels are not science fiction, but Cyberpunk novels are intrinsically Science Fiction. However, the argument of this thesis is the very act of typification has been integrated into the commodity system that produces fluidity in the typification of the novels that can only be adequately used for advertising categories. This is shown with three steps through reading Early Novels of Thomas Pynchon as quintessential Slipstream and William Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy representing Cyberpunk genre. Firstly, the argument of delves into the Postmodernity or Late capitalist Society that has been periodized by Fredric Jameson that with the unprecedented expansion of capitalism everything becomes integrated into commodity system from art and culture in general, including theory, which encompasses the designated novels and the rhetoric of their categories. Secondly, the thesis examines the textual relations between the segregated novels and highlight the novels of William Gibson to re-use material, models and motifs from Pynchon that has been called pastiche or blank parody that makes them inspirate. Thirdly, by connecting what previously demonstrated that everything has been integrated into the commodity system and there is a pastiche in such novels of William Gibson and Thomas Pynchon, the argument advances to put the genre typification act as marketing device. Sterling's SF as a criterium for policing the boundaries of SF itself turns into a marketing category thus the novel typification thus not only the typification but the whole rhetoric of producing genres and distinctions is turning into advertising strategies rather than actual breakdown of high and pop-fiction.
