SUMMARY The history of the water system in Istanbul is as old as the history of Istanbul itself, and it dates back to the late Roman Ages. The large supply pipes and distribution system had been built both in Byzantine and Ottoman periods. In the 19th century, the demand for water increased, and even the recently built water systems became inefficient. In this century, especially in Istanbul, the influence from Europa was very significant. The most important effect - in our point of view - was the usage of vapour machines to pump the water. By this method, the distribution of water was liberated from the topoghrapy. In Istanbul, there were lots of these vapor machines located in various counties. Cendere water pump station is one among them. This building is still kept and used by Water Supply and Waste Water Company of Istanbul Municipality (ISKI). In the 18th century due to the influences of western civilization, Ottoman Sultans adopted lots of the new technologies, vapor machines, organisational and administrative planning, and engineering especially from France. These were taken place in the developing of modern industry of Ottoman Empire, and there were lots of factories built. In 1902, in the reign of Abdülhamit II., Cendere Pump Station was projected, andcompound type machines were imported. XXVCendere Pump Station was located in Ayazağa, it covers the Total 12.210m3 area. This Structure was built by French engineers in 1902. Cendere Pump Station is one of the latest, and the most specific structures of Ottoman Empire. Cendere Pump Station was built in the reign of Abdülhamit II. for supplying water in Haliç area, which has insufficient water sources. Before the construction of this one, Taksim Water Network was in use. The amount of water distributed from Taksim until the construction was 1300m3. With the Cendere Pump Station, the capacity has increased from 1300m3 to 2000m3 of water. Cendere Pump Station has two, 600m2 water reservoirs. The machinery in this build could pump of water to 120m perhour they could transfer water 2300m for with gravity. Each machine has 85 BB power and has 255mm diameter font pipes to pomp water to water centruies The study of similic yapıs from some helps to determine the changes in the structure of build and to determine te additional contructiors and damages. After all these studies, decisions and suggestions were made about restoration. In literal investigations, both the private and public libraries were used. Especially in Taksim Atatürk Library, the collection of the old newspapers and books and records and documentation from the related period of time. The building which belongs to the Potable Water and Sewage Authority of Istanbul (İSKİ), is proposed to be used as a centre containing museum, exhibition, seminar and library uruts, in the frame of this thesis. As a result of the study, it is observed that there is no available, exhibition space for historical instruments, XXVImaps and even the books about the various hydroulic structures, at İSKİ. All this material is exhibited in different departments of İSKİ, without any case. It should be kept in mind that, researche on the traditional hydroulic systems would get a new vision and a wider perspective about the contemporary hydroulic systems and units of water use. Exhibiting the whole instruments and documents together systematicly in the subject building would undobtedly be an activity which enlightens our history on hydroulic technology. First of all, the adaptibility of the building to the proposal is investigated. While producing the restoration project, the original issues were:keeping the intervention on the original texture of the building at minimum not changing the originality of the inner spaces, making the restoration depend on to the original materials and constructure technigues. The present situation and the deformations on the structure are found out, the reasons of the deformations are investigated and the instructions are stated. No new massion or spatial addition is proposed to the functionally renewed building. The building which shall be exhibited as a beautiful industrial structure. With its strong structure and scale in this developing district of the ity, must be restored with care on its high qualities. At present, water is supplied form five water towers to the Press Pump Station and it is diverted to four fountains. Since the water thank can not be cleaned and since the waste water XXVIIstraining in the supplied water with an amount of 155 m3/day is getting dirty. Because of this the water supplied from this source can be given to either Hamidiye A.Ş. or Hamidiye Cooperative. This building will be restored depending on the restutition project. The walls of the space M3 and M4, which are added to the long space in which the pumps are located, will" be removed. One of the pumps, which is not in the building is exhibited in Terkos Old Water Pump Station. This machine will be located in its original place. This space and the water storage with a capacity of 600 m3 under it, are going to be converted in to exhibition areas. The 80-90 cm wide holes on the floor will be used as staircase to this exhibition area. The walls of the spaces M6,M7,M8 which are added to the boiler room, will be removed. This space and the space Mil are going to be used as exihibition spaces. Space M9, which was used as coal storage before, is suitable to be used as seminar room with its size and location. Space M18 which is on the south eastern facade of the building will be used as library while space M15 is organised as the map room. This study is consisting of seven main parts. In part one, methods and aim of the study is described. In part two, historical and geographical sturucture of Istanbul is described. Improvement and position of Ayazağa which is out of Istanbul City Wall is discussed. XXVIIIIn part 3, water sources of Istanbul are explained throughout history. In this part, I also talk about water related structures in Istanbul, both in pre-Ottoman and Ottoman periods shortly. In part 4, information about the building of Hamidiye water station and Hamidiye isolated pipe line is given. In part 5, plan features, structural features, materials and technical features of Cendere Pump Station was explained. In part 6, information which comes from results of too many researchs and to survey direction about restitution of Cendere water pump. In part 7, suitable new function is given to Cendere pump station And its surrounding area. At the sametime some suggestions are made, which are related to restoration facilities without changing originality. XXIX
