Özet (Çeviri)

Hippocampus-dependent learning and memory system may contribute to age-related declines in memory abilities for both spatial and non-spatial information. The transitive inference (TI) task is supposed to be a way to assess the hippocampus-dependent learning as suggested by the relational model and supported with neuroimaging studies. However, as revealed by lesion studies, the hippocampus may not be necessarily involved in the TI task and performances could be supported by alternative reinforcement-based learning strategies requiring the critical involvement of the striatum-dependent learning and memory system. Here, I aimed to decipher the learning strategies used in the TI task and test the hypothesis of impaired hippocampus-dependent learning and memory system. Young and older participants were tested on the Visual Discrimination task (VD), Conditional Learning task (CL) and TI task. Performances were analyzed both at the group and the individual levels. In the VD task, older participants performed as well as young participants. In the CL task, they were able to perform as well as young individuals with extended training. However, in the TI task, they performed worse than young participants at the group level and they were not able to learn all premise pairs at the individual level whereas almost all young individuals could learn all of them. Overall, findings revealed that the TI task could be solved by both strategies and the hippocampus-dependent learning might be impaired in aging.
