This study aims to take a step to determine the role of 'Acâ'ib'ül-mahlûkât (The Book of Marvels and Wonders), which was translated from Zekeriyyâ b. Muhammed Kazvînî (d. 682/1283) by Sürûrî (d. 969/1562), who is one of the leading authors of sixteenth century, with the request of his student Şehzade Mustafa (d. 960/1553), in the Ottoman context. In this context, this study analyzes the power the minhus in one of the oldest copies of this translation of Sürûrî, which is dated 960/1553, have over the reader by evaluating them as a paratext. The said analyzing is done by first decoding the terms 'acâ'ib and garâ'ib and by examining their place in Islamic understanding. Then the focus shifts to the examination of the books that contain 'acâ'ib and garâ'ib elements written in different periods in history and their translations to Ottoman Turkish. Following these examinations, as the study will center Sürûrî's translation of 'Acâ'ib'ül-mahlûkât, Sürûrî's background and his connections within the intellectual sphere he belonged to will be touched upon in order to understand the place of his translation in Ottoman Context. Afterwards, the audience of this translation will be detected by examining its language and content. Last but not least, this study adapts the term paratext to manuscript studies and proposes to view minhus, which are one of the layout elements of the copy, in this framework. Thus, the place of Sürûrî's translation of 'Acâ'ibü'l-mahlûkât can be understood better and more importantly, it is claimed that minhus, which this study takes as a paratext element, has a role in forming a bridge between the manuscript and the reader.
