The shift from the industrial based economy to service-based economy has not only changed the social structures of the people but also changed the urban configuration of the cities. The factories and industrial spaces that was built in the previous centuries and Fordist period has been abandoned with the arrival of Post-Fordist era. These industrial areas are commonly located at the centres of cities. Lack of treatment to former industrial sites has led them become the black holes of the metropolises. Like many other cities Istanbul has also experience this phenomenon. Istanbul is a metropolis with nearly 16 million people (and counting) living in. It is a city with a great historical significance, many architectural masterpieces are located in. Istanbul contains several industrial buildings that were established during the Ottoman era. Numerous former industrial sites have been regenerated and many of them are waiting to be managed. The aim of this study is to answer to the question; 'how to link a former industrial site to a contemporary city?'. For the case study of this thesis, Halic shipyard is chosen. The shipyard is a 500-year-old site that carries the industrial heritage of Istanbul. The solution seeks to create a balance within the overly crowded, overly built and overly populated Istanbul and the former industrial space. The study will go over key topics and phenomenons for a better understanding, in addition a research on both international and local case studies of urban regeneration of industrial sites will be carried. Moreover, both Istanbul as a city and the site itself will be analysed. Finally, a design solution will emerge as a method that can be applied to the Halic shipyard and many other former industrial sites.
