Özet
Turkey, which is a natural bridge between Europe and Middle East, can be defined as a“middle-income developing country”. In consequence of its young and dynamic population and developing industry, Turkey has a rapidly growing energy market with approximately 125 mtoe total annual energy demand in 2014. However, Turkey does not have sufficient natural resources to cope with its increasing energy demand and as a result imports most of its energy need. With 23% share in total import of Turkey, energy import bill has reached 55 billion USD in 2014. Turkey consumes mostly natural gas, oil, coal and renewables for meeting its energy demand. As the largest source of Turkish energy supply with 35% share in total energy mix, natural gas consumption has reached to 48.7 bcm in 2014 and is expected to be 80 bcm in 2030. The increase of natural gas demand brings the necessity of market liberalisation in order to ensure competition and protect consumer benefits. Turkish Natural Gas Market has been going through a liberalisation process with many correct but insufficient improvements starting with the enactment of the Natural Gas Market Law in 2001. Although every country has its own dynamics, United Kingdom natural gas market can be a good example for the liberalisation of Turkish natural gas market in a lot of ways. This project is aiming to provide suggestions for accelerating the liberalisation of Turkish natural gas market by comparing it with United Kingdom.
