Digitalisation, increasing with the effect of globalisation every year, is one of the most vital formations in global trade and economy. Undoubtedly, the greatest contribution to the growth of global trade is provided by shipping. The adaptation of ports and maritime companies to digitalisation is important in the future in order to continue as a whole together with other sectors and to maintain competitive advantage. With the strategic management methods to be implemented, smart ports increased their investments in digital enterprises in areas such as IoT, Cloud Systems, Automation, 3D Printer and Blockchain. Port of Antwerp, Port of Rotterdam and Port of Abu Dhabi are three critical smart ports that increase their investments and continue their digital initiatives. This background information is based on a secondary resource and case study to analyse the position of the current ports and other sectors. With the adaptive research method, digitalisation levels of the industries were analysed, strategic and process benchmarking were applied, and strategic criteria were determined both within the maritime industry and among other industries. The balance score card and the basic elements that determine the smart port criteria were taken as a basis and the applicability of the Blockchain technology, which will increase the competitiveness of smart ports in the coming years, was also compared by equating the previous studies. As a result of the study, it was determined that logistics sector is far behind other sectors in the context of digitalisation. However, it is a potential fact that the number of smart ports will increase as the competitiveness level uptrend in the short term and that investments will concentrate especially on Blockchain.
