Cryptocurrencies' promised benefits and solutions are one of the noteworthy topics of the recent period. Although crypto communities have already accepted them as the new money of the future's world due to promised benefits, the decentralised and unregulated nature of cryptocurrencies has also caused most countries to be cautious about them. On the other hand, some countries consider cryptocurrencies as a great opportunity that can provide solutions for chronic problems in the economy. Intention to create a trustable currency against high inflation or to find an alternative payment system, which cannot be subjected to obstacles due to political conflicts, in foreign trade may be counted as the basis of this seeking. In this context, the Venezuelan government's idea of creating a national cryptocurrency backed by the petroleum assets of the country should be elaborated as an important example. Therefore, this study analyses status, motivations and possible benefits and limitations of the Venezuelan national cryptocurrency, Petro.
