The aim of the current study is to investigate the association among parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive parenting styles), children's aggression level as well as emotion regulation. As the reference, 156 mothers of primary school children, ages 7 to 9, participated in the current correlational study. Parenting styles in mothers were measured using Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaires (PSDQ). Aggression levels were assessed using Children's Aggression Scale-Parent Version (CAS-P). The Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC), which was used to measure children's emotion regulation. Spearman correlation coefficient and multiple hierarchical regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Correlation analyses revealed that children, reared with authoritative parenting, had lower level of aggression and higher ability to regulate their emotions. On the other hand, children who were exposed to authoritarian parenting or permissive parenting, showed higher level of aggression, as well as, lower ability to regulate their emotions. According to the regression analysis, parenting styles explained a 31.9% variance with regard to the aggression, by which the permissive parenting is the significant predictor of aggression. With emotion regulation added into the equation, the amount of explained variance increased by 2.8%. Both permissive parenting (PSDQ) and emotion regulation (ERC) significantly predicted aggression (CAS-P). The results of the current study were discussed according to implications for parents, child psychologists and other professionals working with children, who have higher aggressive behaviors and lower ability to regulate emotions.
