Özet (Çeviri)

The main goal of the present study is to investigate the effects of crosslinguistic influence in third language acquisition of the non-generic the in L3-English by adult L1-Turkish L2-German participants. The following research question is addressed: Does transfer in L3 acquisition come from the L1, L2 or from both? In addressing this question, this study reports on a story-telling task (Task 1) assessing the use of the in bridging contexts (e.g. Jane wanted to open a jar. She removed the lid and scooped out some jam. (Chondrogianni, Marinis, Edwards & Blom, 2014, p.9)), and on an insert-the task (Task 2) testing the metalinguistic knowledge of the participants about the. These tasks were conducted with intermediate L1-Turkish L2- English (n=9), advanced L1-Turkish L2-English (n=7), intermediate L1-German L2-English (n=2), advanced L1-German L2-English (n=12), intermediate L1-Turkish L2-German L3-English (n=4), advanced L1-Turkish L2-German L3-English (n=5) speakers and native speakers of English (n=11). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics due to an insufficient number of participants in the groups to run inferential statistics. The general conclusion is based on the data from the intermediate L1-Turkish L2-German L3-English participants in Task 1, and from the intermediate and advanced L1-Turkish L2-German L3-English participants in Task 2. As all the advanced groups performed native-like on Task 1, no conclusion could be drawn with regards to the transfer made by the advanced L1-Turkish L2-German L3-English participants in Task 1. Nevertheless, the overall analysis reveals that the intermediate and advanced L1- Turkish L2-German L3-English participants transferred predominantly from their L2-German rather than from their L1-Turkish, which supports the L2 Status Factor Model (Bardel & Falk, 2007, 2012; Falk & Bardel, 2011), the Scalpel Model (Slabakova, 2016), the Linguistic Proximity Model (Westergaard et al., 2016), and the Cumulative Enhancement Model (Flynn et al., 2004), which are prevalent formal models explaining transfer in L3 acquisition. However, the results could not be explained by the accounts that propose transfer only from the L1.
