This essay delves into Friedrich Nietzsche's idea of the eternal return of the same. The focus is on examining the concept's development in his thinking and its significance in the tragic worldview. The analysis primarily concentrates on the intrinsic relationship between eternal return and the tragic worldview through a historical study of Greek discourses on recurrence, especially Heraclitus. The Heraclitean fragment B52 supports the notion of aiōn, which asserts the ever-youthful and ever-repeating cycles of existence, an idea central to the thought of eternal return. Heraclitus believes that life and death, joy and sorrow, are inseparable, and seeks the ultimate rule in the recurrence of the selfsame. In this manner, Heraclitus does not subscribe to the prevalent mystery cults that promised a blessed afterlife; instead, he embraces mortality and finitude. Nietzsche shares Heraclitus's view that one cannot ignore the certainty of death. Both aiōn and eternal return acknowledge the finite nature of existence, which is central to the tragic worldview. They negate the possibility of an inherent meaning or goal in life, affirming the intimate unity of life and death, joy and sorrow. In the end, the underlying affinity between Nietzsche's concept of eternal return and the Heraclitean aiōn can be demonstrated and Nietzsche's formulation of eternal return can be traced back to the fundamentals of Heraclitus' thought.
