SUMMARY Azarbaijan, which has an important part in the carpet business, played an active role in the typical development of the Caucasus carpets. I followed a continuous course in the region in parallel with the endless possibilities which the nature extended. So Azarbaijan has been a country where the carpet business always preserved its liveliness. On proclaiming its independence on 30 September 1991, Azarbaijan made an important progress in the field of economy, education and culture in order to catch up with the developments which took place in Turkey for 70 years. It is undeniable feet that there is a close relation between the two countries in respect of history, language, religion, art, tradition and custom. What we mean in this study entitled XVTI-XIX Centuries Azarbaijan Carpets, is to determine and publicize the carpets of the period that are kept in Baku and Nahcivan museums. The other aim is to prepare a catalogue of these products and to express the data obtained out of this study. In the introduction, the importance of Azarbaijan which has an important place in the Caucasus in the field of carpet business, was dwelled on and insufficiency of the researches was touched and important sources related with the subject were stated. In addition it has been inevitable to include in our study the frequently used carpet terms in Azarbaijan. In the 2. Chapter,“Geographical Situation of Azarbaijan and its History”, the geographical boundaries and the historical processes it experienced was shortly touched. 276The 3. Chapter“Azarbaijan Carpet Art”is made up of the sub-titles such as“An Overview of Azarbaijan Carpet Art”, Azarbaijan Carpets in Various Regions“ and ”Technical Qualifications of Azarbaijan Carpets“. In this chapter, the carpet art of Azarbaijan was shortly dwelled on; the stages it went through and the carpet centres and groups which appear as a result of these stages were touched. Tebriz group, which is out of Azerbaijan boundaries today but considered in these groups, is just mentioned by headlines. This group, which offers extremely rich samples, is still to be explored in detail in the future, since it constitutes the subject of another research. Besides in this chapter the materials, technique, colour, motif and composition characteristics which forms the carpet structure was also mentioned. The IV. Chapter is the catalogue, which reflects the essence of the study. The carpets of the period in state museum of ”Azarbaijan carpets and the art of public application“. The Museum of History, ROstem Mustafayev Museum, History Museum of Nahcivan State in Nahcivan and the Turkish Islamic Works Museum in Istanbul were especially studied and two samples obtained through the correspondence with Victoria and Albert Museum in England were also included in the catalogue. Grouping of works in the present work was made as Kuba-Şjrvan, Gence- Kazak, Karabağ and Tebriz for the regions. V. Chapter of the study is the Evaluation The carpets have been presented and evaluated on the basis of the data formed in the light of information in the catalogue. And their materials, techniques, colour, motif and composition characteristics have been compared within themselves and with the similar Anatolian samples and their interactions were emphasised. 277In chapter VI ”Results“, evaluations and interpretations towards the whole study have been included. VII. chapter is the ”Summary“ Vin. chapter is the ”Bibliography“ in the study many works written both in Russian and in Azarbaijani Turkish have been examined. The names of the works written in Russian were given by Latin alphabet and their Turkish meaning were given in parenthesis. As to the works written in Azarbaijan Turkish, they were given as they were pronounced and emphasised as (Azarbaijan Turkish) in parenthesis. Detailed presentation of 80 sample carpets included in the catalogue were given totally in the ”Inventory Tables“. In the ”Photographs chapter,“ the photographs of the works in the catalogue were given. This is followed by the 'DRAWINGS”chapter, including the drawings of the important samples mentioned in the text and catalogue. Computer technology was made use of in the drawings of the motife and cross sections. The list of the photographs, the list of the drawings was added to the end of the text. It is certain that more extensive researches in the field of Azarbaijan carpets varying regionally as various types and groups and more sensitive measures to be conducted one by one will lead us to more sound and concrete results. 278
