Özet
The proper processing, containment, and disposal of waste discharged by nuclear industry activities with the objective of safeguarding individuals and the ecosystem are referred to as radioactive waste management. Nuclear waste, in particular, must be treated before disposal. This involves gathering and separating waste, as well as lowering its size and modifying its physicochemical makeup, like condensing wastewaters, and lastly treating it so that it is immobilised and packed before removal and handling. Before deciding on a waste management plan, it is crucial to fully comprehend the origin of the waste and the rate of its formation, along with the waste volumes and features. Characterization is a method that offers information about the structural, chemical, and nuclear qualities of waste, allowing suitable safety precautions and viable processing choices to be identified. This even assures suitability and adherence to established storage and disposal guidelines. Each operation that employs nuclear materials, both medicinal and industrial applications, produces radioactive waste of different forms. Yet, due to the huge quantities created and the long-lived structure of nuclear energy, it is the major source of such materials. Radioactive wastes, regardless of their source, must be treated securely and affordably. Radioactive waste is classified into three types based on its radioactivity and the time period it stays harmful: low-level waste, intermediate-level waste, and high-level waste. The disposal of low-level wastes and most intermediate-level wastes is well-established, whereas the majority of high-level waste is carefully held in specific locations. The final disposal of high-level waste in underground storage repositories is acknowledged by the academic and industrial communities, but the public in many nations has yet to embrace it. With that, for the other two kinds of wastes, nearsurface disposal facilities (NSDF) which are the main focus of this project, can be considered a proper option if the requirements are met.
