Özet
Demiryolu işletmeciliği on dokuzuncu yüzyılın sonlarına doğru çevre duyarlılığın da önem kazanması ile hızlanmıştır ve yolcu ve yük taşımacılığı ile önemini arttırmıştır. Kent içi ulaşım sisteminde ana omurga hatları olarak hafif raylı sistemler ve metro ile hizmete sunulmaya başlanıp toplu taşımada önem kazanmıştır. Dünya'da ve Türkiye'de günümüzde, gelişmiş şehirlerin kent içi toplu ulaşımında ana omurga hatlarının raylı sistemler üzerine kurulduğu görülmektedir. Türkiye'nin büyük şehirlerinde, göçlerin ve nüfusun artmasıyla birlikte ulaşımın önemi her geçen gün artmakta ve trafik problemi ile beraber insanların toplu ulaşım sistemlere olan ihtiyacı ve sunulacak olan alternatif çözümlerin önemi artmaktadır. Bu tez çalışmasının amacı, Mersin'de yapımına başlanan metro projesinin ortaya çıkaracağı etkileri araştırmaktır. Proje inşası devam ederken, yaşayan halkın bu duruma anket sorularına verdikleri cevaplar ile bu bağlamda metro projesinin Mersin şehir trafiğine olabilecek etkileri araştırılmıştır. Bu projenin trafik sıkışıklığını azaltma potansiyeli, toplu taşıma kapasitesini artırma ve kentsel ulaşımı iyileştirme açısından ne gibi faydalar sağlayabileceği incelenmiştir.

Railway operations accelerated towards the end of the nineteenth century as environmental awareness gained importance and increased its importance with passenger and freight transportation. As the main backbone lines in the urban transportation system, light rail systems and subways have been put into service and gained importance in public transportation. Today in the world and in Turkey, it is seen that the main backbone lines of urban public transportation in developed cities are based on rail systems. In the big cities of Turkey, the importance of transportation is increasing day by day with the increase in migration and population, and with the traffic problem, people's need for public transportation systems and the importance of alternative solutions to be offered are increasing. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the impacts of the metro project in Mersin. While the project is under construction, the responses of the residents to the survey questions and the effects of the metro project on Mersin city traffic in this context are investigated. The potential benefits of this project in terms of reducing traffic congestion, increasing public transportation capacity and improving urban transportation are examined.
