Özet
Gadolinium Based Contrast Agents (GBCAs) are one of the most important contrast agents used in MRI scans. Due to their highly stable structure, pollution in the environment, especially the aquatic environment increases over time. Compared with surface water, lower pollution in groundwater was observed in the pilot site in Barcelona. The adsorption capacity of soil and the soil biome can effectively attenuate that. The pilot site soil biome consists of lactate-utilizing, denitrifying ironoxidizing, and iron-reducing bacteria. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate their effect on GBCAs' behaviors in groundwater. In terms of biogeochemical conditions, a good fit between current pilot site geochemistry and literature was found. On the other hand, soil biome respiration speed was found faster than in previous research. Moreover, instead of time-dependent decay, the growth of bacteria was found. Better conditions in the reactor might have led to such a situation. In terms of Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agent behavior, a high transmetallation rate was found and that rate aligns with previous research done on Gd-DTPA-BMA transmetallation. A high kinetic sorption rate to the soil surface has been found. Soil adsorption capacity in the pilot site was found in the range of literature, and significant Gd uptake by soil biome was not found. Differences in transmetallation rate and adsorption can occur due to physicochemical differences in GBCAs, and they can cause different pollution amounts. To properly assess GBCAs pollution on the environment, extensive transmetallation and adsorption tests should be done on different types of GBCA.
