Observations following recent destructive earthquakes have underscored the critical role of shear walls in reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, emphasizing their superior performance under seismic forces. The presence of adequate shear walls enhances structural stiffness and lateral load resistance, making them a pivotal element in seismic design. This thesis aims to analyze the influence of varying shear wall ratios on the seismic behavior of RC buildings in high-seismicity regions through a comprehensive parametric study. A total of 45 three-dimensional structural models were developed, representing buildings with story numbers ranging from 4 to 12 and shear wall indices between 0.8% and 2.4%. To ensure valid comparisons, shear walls were converted to equivalent columns in buildings with identical structural systems, thus maintaining consistent structural properties and avoiding irregularities. The analyses were conducted using ETABS software, adhering to the principles of the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC, 2018). Three different soil classes—ZC, ZD, and ZE—were incorporated into the models to account for varying site conditions. A total of 135 analyses were performed using the mode superposition method as outlined in TBEC 2018. These analyses provided insights into the seismic behavior of the buildings and facilitated the determination of optimum shear wall indices. In the first section, the study's objectives, scope, and a comprehensive review of existing literature are introduced. This review highlights the significance of shear walls in seismic design and identifies gaps addressed by the current study. The objectives of the research include identifying optimal shear wall indices for different seismic and structural conditions, ensuring a balance between structural safety and economic feasibility. In the second section, the characteristics and design principles of RC shear walls are examined in depth. Shear walls are categorized based on their geometric configurations, such as rectangular, T-shaped, and core walls, with a discussion on how their placement in both horizontal and vertical planes influence their efficiency. For instance, symmetrically placed shear walls around a building's core improve torsional resistance, whereas eccentric placements may lead to undesirable stress concentrations. National and international design codes, including TBEC 2018 and Eurocode 8, outline critical parameters for shear wall design, such as minimum reinforcement ratios, ductility requirements, and aspect ratio limits. Constructive rules, including boundary element detailing and confinement zones, are also addressed to highlight their role in enhancing seismic performance. The section emphasizes the importance of adhering to these design principles to ensure optimal functionality under seismic forces. The third section details the methodology employed for the study. Parametric models were developed to simulate the seismic behavior of RC buildings, systematically categorized by story number (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 stories) and shear wall index (0.8%, 1.2%, 1.6%, 2.0%, and 2.4%). Three soil classes, ZC, ZD, and ZE, were incorporated to represent varying site conditions as defined by TBEC 2018. The modeling process began with defining the structural system, including beams, columns, and shear walls, in the ETABS software. Material properties such as concrete strength, steel reinforcement, and damping ratios were assigned based on code specifications. Modal analysis was conducted to evaluate the dynamic properties of the structures, including natural frequencies and mode shapes. The use of the mode superposition method ensured accurate representation of seismic demands across different configurations. In the fourth section, the results of 135 analyses are presented and discussed in detail, organized into various subcategories to highlight key trends and observations. For each shear wall index, the relationship between story number and seismic forces is systematically examined. The findings indicate that increasing the shear wall index enhances lateral stiffness and reduces inter-story drifts, especially in taller buildings. Base shear forces, a critical measure of seismic demand, are analyzed in relation to shear wall indices. The results reveal that buildings with higher indices exhibit better seismic performance, particularly on softer soils (ZD and ZE). Modal parameters, including periods and frequencies, are evaluated to understand how shear walls influence dynamic behavior. Additionally, demand-to-capacity ratios for shear wall elements in core regions are assessed, highlighting the role of soil conditions in determining structural performance. Graphs and tables are extensively used to illustrate these findings, enabling a clear comparison across different scenarios. For example, plots comparing inter-story drift ratios across various shear wall indices demonstrate the effectiveness of higher indices in controlling lateral displacements. These visual aids also shed light on how seismic demands shift with changes in soil conditions, offering practical insights for engineers and designers. In the final section, the conclusions drawn from the study and recommendations for seismic design are synthesized. The study identifies optimal shear wall indices for various combinations of story numbers and soil classes. For instance, indices above %2.0% are deemed effective for buildings on ZE soil, while lower indices may suffice for ZC conditions. The results emphasize the importance of balancing structural performance with economic considerations, advocating for tailored design strategies. The integration of non-linear analysis methods and performance-based design approaches is also recommended to further enhance seismic resilience. Additionally, practical design guidelines derived from this study can serve as a reference for engineers working in high-seismicity regions. By incorporating the recommended shear wall indices, designers can achieve a more efficient balance between safety and cost. These recommendations also align with broader efforts to improve the resilience of the built environment against earthquakes, contributing to reduced risks and enhanced public safety. This comprehensive analysis not only advances the understanding of shear wall behavior under seismic forces but also provides practical guidelines for optimizing their use in RC buildings, thereby contributing to safer and more resilient structures in earthquake-prone areas.
