Lumbar disc herniation is a common mechanical condition that frequently affects the spine in young and middle-aged patients. The use of telerehabilitation has increased in recent years. In the literature reviews, no study was found comparing the effectiveness of telerehabilitation and brochure education in patients with lumbar disc herniation who where provided with home exercise programs. The aim of our study was to develop a web-based telerehabilitation exercise and follow-up program, and compare it with traditional methods in the context of a home exercise program. For the study, a web-based telerehabilitation exercise and follow-up program was developed. A clinical trial was conducted with 80 patients to assess the effectiveness of the program. Of these, 34 were excluded due to exclusion criterias. The remaining 46 participants were randomly assigned to two intervention groups: Brochure Group (n=23) and Telerehabilitation Group (n=23). Both groups were evaluated before and after the home program using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) to assess pain intensity (overall, resting activity, night sleep), the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) to assess disability level, the SF-12 quality of life scale (physical and mental component scores), and static and dynamic lumbar muscle strength and endurance measurements. When comparing pre-treatment parameters, a significant difference was observed in dynamic lumbar muscle strength and endurance in favor of the brochure group (p=0.018). After 4 weeks of treatment, analysis showed no improvement in the SF-12 mental component score in the brochure group (p=0.101), while the telerehabilitation group showed improvement in all parameters (p<0.001). No significant differences were found between groups in VAS resting, night pain, and SF-12 physical component scores (p=0.117; 0.051; 0.238). The results of this study show that both the Brochure Group and the Telerehabilitation Group experienced significant improvements in pain levels, functional disability, muscle strength, and quality of life following treatment. However, the Telerehabilitation Group consistently showed greater progress across several parameters, including pain reduction, functional disability, muscle strength, and mental health. These results suggest that telerehabilitation is more effective than brochure-based exercise programs.
