Graphene has a single layer of carbon atoms with a hexagonal lattice structure. In this study, three different methods were investigated to produce graphene-based materials from graphite and plastic. The first was the Hummers method, which produced graphene oxide (GFO) from graphite, and the second method used liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) to produce graphene from graphite. Pyrolysis was the third method which graphene was obtained using the synthesized NiCo/bentonite catalyst. Graphene-based samples were characterized using XRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, BET, SEM, TEM, TGA, UV-Vis spectroscopy, CHNS/O analysis and XRF characterization methods. Electrochemical tests were performed to determine the hydrogen storage capacity of the graphene materials obtained. Multilayer graphene (MLGF) was found to have the highest hydrogen storage capacity with a value of 236 mAh.g⁻¹. NiCo/rGFO composite materials were synthesized with different active metal loading ratios (1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 2:2) by impregnation method. Then, this composite material was used as a catalyst in hydrogen production from NaBH4 by hydrolysis method. The effects of parameters such as temperature (30, 40, 50, 60 °C), NaOH solution concentration (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 M) and metal loading ratios (1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 2:2 NiCo) on the catalyst activity were investigated. 2:2 metal loading ratio, 60 °C temperature and 0.25 M NaOH concentration were determined as the most suitable operating parameters. Under this condition, NiCo/rGFO composite material provided a remarkable hydrogen production rate of 255.10 mL.min⁻¹ gcat⁻¹, 100% hydrogen yield, and with the activation energy (Ea) of 27.3 kJ.mol⁻¹. This composite material was found to have a hydrogen storage capacity of 297.75 mAh.g⁻¹ and a remarkably low resistivity of 6.79 Ω.
