Özet
Bu tez, Osmanlı Devleti'nin modernleşme tecrübesini, Tanzimat Dönemi romanlarından Millî Edebiyat Dönemi romanlarına değin, mahremiyet mefhumu üzerinden okumayı amaçlamaktadır. Toplumu, kültürü ve mimariyi etkileyen yapısıyla mahremiyetin izlerini Türk romanında sürmek, kültür ve medeniyet perspektifindeki radikal dönüşüme mercek tutacaktır. Bu çalışmada, 19. yüzyılda roman türü ile tanışan Osmanlı yazarının mahremiyet tasavvuru incelenerek, kendisi bizzat mahremiyet ihlâli olan romandan nasıl yararlandığı ve nasıl bir mahremiyet anlayışı oluşturduğu sorusuna cevap aranacaktır. Bu noktada, Osmanlı'nın söylendiği gibi bir“mahremiyet/söylenmeyenler toplumu”olup olmadığı sorusu sorulurken romanın bu noktadaki işlevi sorgulanacaktır. Böylece, mahremiyetin insan, toplum, kültür, mimarî, şehir ve ikili ilişkiler üzerindeki tesiri ortaya konulurken modern Osmanlı öznesinin idrakini oluşturan sâiklerle birlikte Cumhuriyet'i tecrübe etmenin eşiğindeki Osmanlı toplumunun geçirdiği değişim tebellür edecektir. Bu bağlamda, Tanzimat Dönemi ile Millî Edebiyat Dönemi romanları arasından seçilen yirmi sekiz romanda mahremiyet, toplumsal, coğrafî ve ferdî veçheleriyle incelenmiştir.

This dissertation examines the modernization experience of the Ottoman Empire by studying the concept of privacy in novels written during the Tanzimat Era up to the National Literature Movement. Tracing the footprints of privacy, which influenced society, culture, and architecture, within Ottoman literature will shed light on the radical transformation in the perspective of culture and civilization. By analyzing the Ottoman author's conception of privacy in the 19th century -when the novel as a genre was first introduced- this study seeks to answer how the novel, which inherently involves a breach of privacy, was utilized and what kind of understanding of privacy it fostered. At this juncture, the question of whether the Ottoman society was truly a“society of privacy/unsaid matters,”as often claimed, will be examined, alongside the function of the novel in this regard. In doing so, the influence of privacy on individuals, society, culture, architecture, urban spaces, and interpersonal relationships will be revealed, alongside the motives shaping the awareness of the modern Ottoman subject. Furthermore, the transformations undergone by Ottoman society on the verge of experiencing the Republic will become evident. In this context, privacy has been analyzed in its social, geographical, and individual dimensions across twenty-eight novels selected from the Tanzimat Era and the National Literature Period.
