Özet
Bu çalışmada İngiltere'nin İstanbul elçisi Sir Thomas Glover'ın görevi süresince ülkesine gönderdiği raporlar ele alınmıştır. Elçi raporları dönemin siyasi, ekonomik, askeri ve sosyal durumu hakkında bilgiler içermesi sebebiyle büyük öneme sahiptir. Çalışma boyunca ilk olarak elçilik ve teşrifat konuları üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu bağlamda elçilik kavramı, Osmanlı'da elçilik müessesesinin gelişimi, yabancı elçilerin kabulü ve ikili devlet ilişkilerinde elçinin önemi ele alınmıştır. Sonrasında ise İngiltere'nin bu dönemde içerisinde bulunduğu durum hakkında bilgi verilmiş ve arkasından Osmanlı-İngiliz ilişkilerinin gayri resmîden resmîye doğru ilerleyiş aşamaları, Sir Thomas Glover'ın elçilik öncesi ve elçiliği boyunca ki faaliyetleri, Sir Thomas Glover'ın ülkesine yazdığı raporlar ışığında Osmanlı Devleti'nin o dönemdeki vaziyeti ve raporların genel değerlendirme ve analizi şeklinde bir sıralama izlenmiştir. Çalışma dönem olarak Sir Thomas Glover'ın elçilik yılları olan 1606-1611 senelerini kapsamakla birlikte dönemin daha iyi anlaşılabilmesi amacıyla önceki sürece de değinilmiştir. Glover döneminde, ülkede yaşanan Kalenderoğlu ve Canbolatoğlu isyanları, Eflak ve Boğdan'da yaşanan gelişmeler, İspanya ile Osmanlı arasındaki çekişmeli durum ve İran ile mücadele sık sık elçinin raporlarında yer almıştır.

This study focuses on the reports sent by Sir Thomas Glover, the British Ambassador to Istanbul, to his home country during his tenure. Glover's ambassadorial reports are of great importance as they contain information about the political, economic, military and social situation of the period. This study begins by addressing the concepts of diplomacy, ambassadorial positions, and courtly protocol. In this part, the development of the ambassadorial institution in the Ottoman Empire, the reception of foreign ambassadors and the importance of the role of ambassador in bilateral state relations are discussed. This study then provides some information on the situation of England in this period, followed by a discussion of the evolution of Ottoman-English relations from unofficial to official contacts. At the final section this study investigates. Sir Thomas Glover's activities before and during his embassy, the situation of the Ottoman Empire in that period in the light of Sir Thomas Glover's reports to his country and thus presents a general evaluation and analysis of the reports. Although the study covers the period 1606-1611, the years of Sir Thomas Glover's embassy, the previous period is also mentioned in order to clarify certain points such as the revolts of Kalenderoğlu and Canbolatoğlu, the developments in Wallachia and Bogdan, the conflict between Spain and the Ottomans, and the struggle with Persia, which were frequently mentioned in the ambassador's reports.
