SUMMARY With his multiple interests (as semiotician, philosopher, author, theoretician, university professor, essayist), Umberto Eco has produced significant works for the European culture in the last thirty years, both in the field of semiotics and popular culture. One of his books of theory of semiotics which reunites a series of previous studies on the mechanics of interpretative cooperation of the text in an organic discourse is Lector in Fabula (1979). With Lector Eco limits his field of research with only narrative texts. Shortly afterwards comes the first novel of the author; II nome della rosa (1980) which has had a big success in the national, as well as in the international field. // nome della rosa is a medieval encyclopedia, a historical novel, full of references to the contemporary world. One can use other adjectives to define the novel, but the point to underline is the publication date of the novel (one year after Lector). Among Eco' s works, these two books can be considered as an example of theory and application of semiotics of textual cooperation The investigation of the relation of intertextuality between Lector in Fabula and II nome della rosa has been the starting point for this study. The first chapter of this study in which the focus is on the other works of the author represents a general vision of the theoretical development of Eco: from the“open text”to the concept of interpretative cooperation of the reader. The second chapter is dedicated to the levels of textual cooperation. Here, the table of the levels of cooperation is examined both at the extentional level and intentional levels with all their components. The aim of the second chapter is to represent the relation of the table of the levels of cooperation and the production process of the novel. The third chapter concludes with the singling out the macropropositions of the novel starting from the micropropositions which can be found in the discursive structures. The last chapter is dedicated to underline the macropropositions of the novel, considering the profound relation of both works. 254
