In this study, the seismic characteristics of the northern, western, and eastern parts of the Thrace Region, extending across Turkey, Bulgaria, and Greece, have been analyzed in the light of historical and current seismic data. The active tectonic structures in the region and the fault systems with potential to generate earthquakes have been examined in detail. The alluvial basin formed by the Meriç (Maritsa), Tunca, Arda, and Ergene rivers is surrounded by the Balkan, Rhodope, and Istranca Mountains to the north, and by the Ganos and Koru Mountains to the south, displaying the characteristics of a morphotectonic area. The extension of the Meriç River within the borders of Bulgaria is referred to as the Maritsa River, and along its course, the Maritsa Fault can be traced from Sofia to Edirne. The seismic event that occurred in 1752, known in the literature as the“Havsa Earthquake,”also took place within this basin. Historical sources reveal that numerous earthquakes with a moment magnitude (Mw) ≥ 6 have occurred in the region. However, a relative decrease has been observed both in the frequency and magnitude of earthquakes over the past century. This study aims to reveal the seismic characteristics of the Thrace Region by addressing its historical and current earthquakes and active fault lines through a comprehensive approach.
