In this doctoral dissertation, an innovative measurement system based on an elastomeric tactile sensor has been designed and successfully implemented to enable precise, quantitative, and high-resolution evaluation of surface defects and roughness. Classical contact-based measurement methods commonly generate only linear profile data through direct contact with the surface, which leads to slow measurement processes and may cause irreversible damage, especially on delicate and soft surfaces. On the other hand, non-contact optical systems often suffer from limitations such as glare, reflection, dependence on material optics, and restricted depth resolution. These technical constraints make it difficult to reliably detect surface topography and micro-defects. To address these limitations, a hybrid system has been developed that is deformation-based yet optically driven, low-cost, portable, compatible with open-source software, and capable of providing full-field quantitative measurements. The system consists of an optically transparent Ecoflex 00-30 elastomer with low Shore A hardness acting as a deformation-sensitive layer, a high-resolution microscopic camera capturing deformation traces from the rear surface of the elastomer, a four-directional controlled illumination setup, and a custom-developed analysis software based on Python and OpenCV. The user interface, developed with PyQt5, offers an intuitive and interactive environment that provides visual, metric, and graphical feedback after each measurement. The system was tested using reference surfaces with different geometrical features (linear, circular, concave, and convex), and its performance was analyzed using ten elastomer samples with varying Shore A hardness values. Experimental results revealed a clear correlation between the elastomer's hardness and its ability to accurately replicate surface deformations. Elastomers with Shore A values below 8 exhibited measurement instability and loss of image clarity, while those above 10 failed to sufficiently conform to the surface, resulting in blurred deformation patterns. Based on these findings, an optimal Shore A range of 8–10 was determined to ensure both high deformation sensitivity and measurement stability. The visual measurement performance of the system was validated by calculating the width and depth metrics of artificial defects with linear and circular shapes. The mean error rate was found to be 0.70% for width and 3.50% for depth. In addition, 3D surface topography and contour maps generated by the system were compared with reference data obtained from a conventional profilometer, and a high level of agreement was observed. Unlike conventional devices that are limited to point or line-based data, the developed system is capable of performing full-field defect analysis and presenting results in a quantitative and visual format. Beyond extracting deformation data, the system can automatically compute and report critical metrics such as defect coordinates, width, and depth. This multi-layered analysis capability provides significant advantages in surface classification, quality control, and defect type identification. Moreover, due to its foundation on open-source algorithms, the system can be further developed and customized for research-oriented applications. In terms of applicability, the system exhibits substantial potential across various domains. It can be effectively used in industrial production lines where surface quality is critical, quality control of 3D-printed parts, biomedical implant surface characterization, detection of contact traces on microelectronic components, inspection of flexible circuits, and tactile surface analysis for biomimetic robotic skins. The modifiability of the elastomer material enhances adaptability to different surface types, while the system's portability and cost-effectiveness improve its accessibility for field applications. In conclusion, this study introduces a novel measurement system that combines deformation-based surface tracking with optical imaging. It offers high quantitative accuracy and practical applicability, contributing an original approach to the literature at the intersection of materials science, mechanical characterization, and computer vision. The proposed method offers promising implications for both academic research and industrial measurement systems.
