Özet
Bu çalışma, Antik Roma'nın Geç Cumhuriyet Dönemi'nde edebiyat ve siyasetin nasıl iç içe geçtiğini, özellikle Cicero'nun Brutus ile Mektuplaşmalar (Epistulae Ad Brutum) adlı mektup koleksiyonunu ele almaya odaklanmıştır. Caesar suikastından sonra yazılan yirmi beş mektuptan oluşan bu koleksiyon, Cicero ve Brutus'un res publica'yı kurtarma planlarına, dönemin siyasi figür ve ilişkilerine, ikilinin giderek zayıflayan ittifaklarına ışık tutar. Cicero cumhuriyetçi bir idealizmle siyasi pragmatizm arasında gidip gelen, hem inandığı değerleri savunmaya çalışan hem de siyasi hayatta etkin olmayı hedefleyen bir entelektüel siyasetçidir. Cumhuriyet'in ilkelerine derin bir bağlılık gösteren Cicero, özellikle res publica kavramını halkın ortak değeri olarak tanımlar ve bu anlayışı hem söylevlerinde hem de felsefi eserlerinde savunur. Tez, sırasıyla Geç Cumhuriyet döneminde edebiyat ve siyaset ilişkisine, bilhassa Cicero özelinde değinir, ardından Cicero'nun kişiliği ve eserlerine geniş bir bakış açısıyla yaklaşır, Cicero'nun retorik ve edebi becerilerini eserlerinde siyasi propaganda yapmak için nasıl kullandığını örneklerle ele alır. Tezin ana konusu olan son bölüm ise, Brutus ile Mektuplaşmalar'a yoğunlaşarak, Cicero'nun bu mektuplara yansıyan siyasi görüşlerini ve Brutus ile olan ilişkisini irdeler.

This study focuses on how literature and politics became intertwined during the Late Roman Republic, with particular emphasis on Cicero's Epistulae ad Brutum, a collection of letters exchanged between Cicero and Brutus. Comprising twenty-five letters written after the assassination of Caesar, this corpus sheds light on the two statesmen's attempts to preserve the res publica, the political actors and relationships of the period, and the gradual deterioration of their alliance. Cicero, a statesman- intellectual, oscillates between republican idealism and political pragmatism, striving to uphold his values while remaining actively engaged in political life. Deeply committed to the principles of the Republic, Cicero defines res publica as the common good of the people, a concept he consistently defends in both his speeches and philosophical works. The thesis first explores the interplay between literature and politics during the Late Republic, with special reference to Cicero, then offers a comprehensive examination of Cicero's character and oeuvre. It further investigates how Cicero employed rhetorical and literary skills as instruments of political propaganda. The final and central chapter of the thesis focuses on Epistulae ad Brutum, analyzing how Cicero's political ideas are reflected in this correspondence and examining the evolution of his relationship with Brutus.
