ÖZET YABANCI DİL SINIFLARINDA UYGULANAN ÇOK KURLU SİSTEMİN ETKİNLİĞİNE YÖNELİK BİR İNCELEME ( Gaziantep Üniversitesi İngilizce Hazırlık Okulunda Yürütülen Bir Çalışma ) DEMİR, Kadiriye Feza Yüksek Lisans Tezi, İngiliz DUi Eğitimi Tez yöneticisi: Yrd. Doç.Dr. Necmiye KARATAŞ Ocak, 2000 205 sayfa Bu çalışmanın amacı, Hazırlık Okulundaki öğrencilerin ve öğretim elemanlarının çok kurlu sisteme yönelik tutumları arasındaki farkları araştırarak ve öğrencilerin ön-test ve son- test basan puanlan arasındaki ilişkiyi hesaplayarak, yabancı dil sınıflannda uygulanan çok kurlu sistemin etkinliğini incelemektir. Tutumlar arası farklan elde edebilmek için rasgele seçilmiş 25 okutman ve 131 Hazırlık Okulu öğrencisi çalışmanın örneklemini oluşturmuştur. Bununla beraber, 131 öğrenci arasından rasgele seçilmiş 30 öğrenci de, çok kurlu sistemin etkinliğini saptamak amacı ile bir ön-test ve de bir son-test almış ve bu öğrenciler örnekleme dahil edilmişlerdir. Aynca, 36 maddeden (ölçekteki 7'den 42'ye kadar olan maddeleri içeren tutum ölçeği) oluşmuş bir tutum ölçeği, Gaziantep Üniversitesi Hazırlık Okulunda, 1998-1999 akademik yılının tüm eğitim dönemi boyunca uygulanmış olan kurlu sisteme yönelik olarak, iiiöğrencilerin ve okutmanların tutumları arasındaki farkları ortaya çıkarmak amacı ile geliştirilmiştir. Verilerin incelenmesinde“frekans dağılımları ve yüzde hesaplan”ile t-test teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca, bir düzey belirleme sınavı, öğrencilerin ön-test ve son-test başarı puanlan arasındaki ilişki olup olmadığını bulmak için, rasgele seçilmiş 30 öğrenciye uygulanmıştır. Veriler, ilişki katsayısı istatistiksel hesaplama teknikleri kullanarak (the Pearson r) belirlenmiştir. Gaziantep Üniversitesi Hazırlık Okulunda uygulanan çok kurlu sisteme yönelik öğrenciler ile okutmalar arasındaki tutum farklanyla ilgili bir sonuç sunabilmek için 6 esas hipotezle bağlantılı 36 ifadeyi yansıtan hipotez verilerinin t-test bulguları hesaplanmıştır. Hipotezlerin kabul ya da reddedildiğini belirten bu bulgular kısaca çalışmanın sonuç bölümünde özetlenmiştir.

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ABILITY GROUPING PLAN IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES (A Case Study in The English Preparatory School at The University of Gaziantep) By Kadiriye Feza DEMİR MA in English Language Teaching Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Necmiye KARATAŞ January, 2000 205 pages The purpose of this study is to analyse the effectiveness of the ability grouping (tracking) plan in foreign language classes (a case study in the English Preparatory School at the University of Gaziantep) by investigating the differences in the attitudes of the Prep- School students and instructors, and by assessing the students' achievement scores in both pre-test and post-test to find out the relationship between these two tests. The subjects whose attitudes were consulted to clarify whether the tracking plan was effective consisted of 25 Prep-School instructors and 131 Prep-School students. Moreover, to reflect the effectiveness of the ability grouping plan (if there was), 30 randomly selected students, among the 131 students, were given a pre-test and a post-test, and they are also considered as the subject of the study.Besides, an attitude scale, including 36 statements (between the 7th and the 42nd statements in the scale), was improved to investigate the differences in the attitudes of the students and instructors towards the ability grouping plan applied during the whole semester of 1998-1999 academic year in the Prep-School at the University of Gaziantep. The data were analysed by utilising“distribution of frequency and percentages”and“t-test”. An Oxford Placement test was given to the 30 randomly selected students to find out whether there was a significant relationship between the students' pre-test and post-test achievement scores. The data were analysed by using“ the Pearson r”statistical calculation techniques. To give a conclusion of the difference in the attitudes of the students and instructors regarding the ability grouping plan applied in the Prep-School at the University of Gaziantep, the t-test results of the 36 statements related to 6 main null-hypotheses were calculated, and the findings about the acceptance and/or rejection of the hypotheses were stated briefly in the summary part of the study.
