Özet
Felsefi hermeneutik geleneğinde, metnin anlamı ile yorum arasındaki sınırı belirleme sorunu halen devam eden tartışmalardan biridir.“Bir metnin nesnel ve sabit bir anlamı var mıdır?”sorusuna verilen cevaba bağlı olarak, disiplin içinde metnin anlamı epistemolojik veya ontolojik zeminlerde tartışılmıştır. E. D. Hirsch'e göre, özellikle ontolojik yaklaşımların metnin anlamına ulaşmanın zor olacağını göstermesi, yorumun keyfileşmesine ve hiçbir zaman doğrulanamayacağı düşüncesinin yaygınlaşmasına sebep olmuştur. Bu şekilde, metnin anlamının okurun tarihsel ufkuna veya yorumun serbestliğine bırakılması, anlamın nesnelliğini ve yorumu doğrulanabilir bilgi üretme imkanını ortadan kaldırmaktadır. Hirsch, özellikle Validity in Interpretation ve The Aims of Interpretation adlı eserlerinde, bu duruma karşı epistemolojik bir zeminde kurduğu anlam ve önem ayrımıyla metodolojik bir itiraz getirir. Böylece, anlamı metinde sabit bir referans noktası olarak korurken, okurun kendi tarihsel ve kültürel bağlamı doğrultusunda metinle kurduğu yeni ilişkileri de önem kavramıyla bağdaştırarak birbirinden ayırır. Hirsch, bu çerçevede metni anlamayı sistematik bir biçimde ele alarak, sözel anlamdan metinsel anlama, yorumdan eleştiriye kadar uzanan metinsel ilişkiler alanını kapsayan metodolojik bir ayrım ortaya koymayı hedefler. Böylece, metni anlamada ortaya çıkan bu farklı anlam düzeylerini birbirine karıştırmadan, her birini kendi sınırları ve işlevi içinde konumlandırılacak ve hermeneutik alandaki kavramsal belirsizlikler düzenlenebilecektir. Bu çalışmada, Hirsch'in anlam ve önem ayrımının hermeneutik disiplin içinde nasıl bir metodoloji sunarak işlev gördüğünü, yorum ve eleştiri alanındaki uygulanabilirliğini incelemeye çalışılacaktır.

In the tradition of philosophical hermeneutics, the problem of determining the boundary between a text's meaning and its interpretation remains one of the ongoing debates. Depending on how the question“Does a text have an objective and determinate meaning?”is answered, discussions within the discipline have been conducted on either epistemological or ontological grounds. According to E. D. Hirsch, the tendency of ontological approaches to emphasize the difficulty or even impossibility of attaining a text's meaning has contributed to the view that interpretation inevitably becomes arbitrary and can never be verified. In this context, leaving the meaning of the text either to the reader's historical horizon or to the unrestricted freedom of interpretation undermines both the objectivity of meaning and the possibility of interpretation as a form of verifiable knowledge production. In response to this situation, Hirsch develops a methodological objection grounded in an epistemological framework through his distinction between meaning and significance, most notably articulated in Validity in Interpretation and The Aims of Interpretation. Through this distinction, he preserves meaning as a fixed reference point inherent in the text, while associating the new relations that readers establish with the text shaped by their historical and cultural contexts with the concept of significance, thereby clearly separating the two. Within this framework, Hirsch aims to address textual understanding in a systematic manner by proposing a methodological differentiation that encompasses a range of textual relations, extending from verbal meaning to textual meaning, and from interpretation to criticism. In doing so, he seeks to prevent the conflation of these different levels of meaning in textual understanding and to situate each within its own boundaries and functions, thereby bringing conceptual clarity to the field of hermeneutics. This study aims to examine how Hirsch's distinction between meaning and significance functions as a methodological framework within the discipline of hermeneutics, and to explore its applicability in the domains of interpretation and criticism.
