This dissertation examines the emergence and development of hermeneutics, with a particular focus on music historiography as articulated in Carl Dahlhaus's writings on nineteenth-century music. The role and position of hermeneutics within this context are critically interrogated, and it is argued that the scope and methodological choices underlying Dahlhaus's historical narratives generate productive and conceptually fertile trajectories for the interpretation of music history.“Musical hermeneutics,”which opens an interpretive field concerned with how the world of musical meaning is constituted, was first introduced by Hermann Kretzschmar at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially, it existed in a way that emphasized the relationship established between the listener and the musical work, aiming to convey the meanings carried by the music to the listener and to prepare them for the listening experience. This aim largely arose from the view, prevalent in the nineteenth century, that instrumental music could not be adequately understood by the listener. In Arnold Schering's approach, which followed immediately after Kretzschmar, it presented itself for the first time as a discipline, emphasizing historical, philological, and analytical criteria. During the same period, views advocating a formalist aesthetics that usually stresses the primacy of formal features, and especially the criticisms of hermeneutics presented by Kretzschmar and later Schering ̶ that it overly focused on“emotion,”vague, speculative, and lacking analysis ̶ left hermeneutics at a standstill for a long time. This retreat, almost to the point of being hesitant to discuss emotion in music, created a significant void in hermeneutics from the 1930s to the 1960s. Although there were attempts to reassert itself on the periphery during this long interval, Carl Dahlhaus emerges with a desire to re-discuss and reposition hermeneutics on a plane that includes historical context, aesthetic categories, and modes of reception. This dissertation outlines the methodological and conceptual frameworks within which musical hermeneutics, as articulated by Kretzschmar and Schering, was situated, and identifies the factors that shaped the trajectory of this tradition in both productive and limiting ways. It traces the motivations behind Dahlhaus's decision to reopen the debate on hermeneutics and examines the contours of the new perspectives he proposed. It is argued that, in Dahlhaus's work, hermeneutics does not function merely as a contextual framework offering a renewed approach to the problem of musical meaning; rather, it is shown to be intrinsically integrated into his historiographical thinking and may be understood as a layer of meaning operating within the very fabric of music history itself. In the part of this dissertation concerned with music historiography, Dahlhaus's approaches to this field and nineteenth-century texts are examined as case studies. While music historiography structured itself through aesthetic presuppositions that shifted periodically up to the twentieth century, the emphasis it placed on the relationship of meaning with the composer and the work likewise changed over time. In the section of the study concerned with music historiography, Dahlhaus's approaches to the field and selected nineteenth-century texts are taken as case studies. Until the twentieth century, music historiography constituted itself through aesthetic presuppositions that shifted from period to period; accordingly, the emphasis placed on the relationship between composer, work, and meaning also underwent historical transformation. Dahlhaus treated the nineteenth century—one of the periods he engaged with most extensively within his broad scholarly output—as a historical terrain in need of critical reconstruction. His historiographical position is significant in that it neither privileges the composer nor the work as an exclusive focal point, and in that it deliberately refrains from a subjectivist mode of interpretation that reduces musical meaning to affect or emotion. This restraint is by no means incidental but reflects a conscious methodological choice. Dahlhaus is shown to conceive musical meaning historically, as mediated by norms, aesthetic presuppositions, and modes of reception shaped by the contingencies of historical change. From this perspective, it is argued that, in his accounts of nineteenth-century music history, he consistently thinks musical meaning and historiography in mutual interdependence, articulating an understanding of historical writing that is inseparable from questions of meaning in music.
