Trabzon İmparatorluğu'nun ilk dönem sikkelerinde Bizans nümismatik geleneğinin etkileri açıkça görülmekle birlikte, I. Manuel Komnenos (1238-1263) döneminde üretilmeye başlanan asper sikkelerle birlikte, Trabzon İmparatorluğu kendine has özellikler gösteren sikkeler oluşturmaya başlamıştır.
The Empire of Trebizond emerged with the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, centred in Trebizond, and was an empire that exerted political and cultural influence in the Eastern Black Sea region. It emerged towards the end of 1203, claiming to be the successor to the collapsing Byzantine Empire, and continued to exist for approximately 257 years. While establishing its own identity, the Empire of Trebizond was influenced by both the Byzantine Empire, whose heir it claimed to be, and the surrounding cultures. This situation was also reflected in the coins minted by the Empire of Trebizond. While the influence of Byzantine numismatic tradition is clearly visible in the coins of the early period of the Empire of Trebizond, with the introduction of asper coins during the reign of Manuel I Komnenos (1238-1263), the Empire of Trebizond began to produce coins with its own distinctive features. In this study, we examined coins from the Trabzon Empire housed in the museums of Ordu, Giresun, Trabzon, and Rize. A total of 1,543 coins were examined, all of which were minted in silver and copper. The vast majority of the coins were minted in asper units. The coins included in our study date from the reign of Andronikos Gidon I (1222-1235) to the reign of Ioannes Komnenos IV (1446-1450). The aim of this study is to evaluate the coins examined in comparison with examples from their own periods and to contribute to scientific literature by introducing them within the framework of the discipline of Art History.
