Purpose: This study aims to investigate the use of calcined raw clays with different mineralogical structures as an alternative aluminosilicate source in geopolymer production; to determine the type and concentration of activator, curing temperature, and mixing method; and to determine the effects of these parameters on the mechanical and thermal performance (energy storage and thermal comfort) of geopolymers. Method: The study was conducted in four main stages. In the first stage, the ideal calcination temperatures and durations for clays with different mineralogical structures were determined. In the second stage, the parameters used in geopolymer production were determined, and the effects of production conditions on compressive strength were investigated. Different curing temperatures (ambient and 60°C) were tested during the production process, aiming to achieve setting and improve compressive strength in ambient curing. In the third stage, the physicomechanical and microstructural properties of the produced geopolymer were evaluated. Geopolymer production was carried out using the determined production parameters, and the compressive strengths were determined at the end of 3, 7, 28, and 90 days in ambient curing. The internal structures of the geopolymers were also examined using SEM-EDS, XRD, and FT-IR analyses. In the final stage, the thermal performance of the geopolymers was investigated using two different (linear and radial) experimental setups. To investigate the use of geopolymers in structural elements (wall and floor heating), full-scale models were created and numerical analyses were performed. The energy storage potentials were determined at the end of the experiments and numerical analyses. Findigs: The results obtained reveal that the compressive strength and thermal performance of calcined clay-based geopolymers vary significantly depending on the type of clay used, calcination conditions, and production parameters. It has been determined that geopolymers produced from kaolin and illite-based clays exhibit high compressive strength, dense microstructure properties, and low thermal conductivity values. The compressive strength and thermal performance of smectite-based clays showed variability. It was observed that, in addition to the dominant minerals, other minerals and metal oxides play a decisive role in their compressive strength and thermal performance. It was determined that geopolymers produced from illite and some smectite group clays have a higher energy storage potential compared to the reference. Results: In geopolymers using calcined forms of five different natural clays, it has been observed that clay mineralogy is decisive in thermal energy storage and compressive strength. Geopolymers produced with calcined kaolin and illite clay groups have the highest compressive strength, while geopolymers produced from calcined smectite group clays have lower compressive strength. In thermal energy storage, geopolymers produced from illite and smectite-based clay groups have shown superior performance. Full-scale thermal analyses conducted in COMSOL Multiphysics revealed that the calcined clay geopolymer selected based on the location and function of the structural element would enable the efficient use of thermal energy. Compared to the cement-based reference group, calcined clay geopolymers have been found to perform better in terms of carbon dioxide emissions and thermal energy storage.
