In contemporary contexts, certain cultural heritage sites continue to exist with their original functions, while others have been repurposed or transformed into museums. While many building typologies can be more readily assigned new functions, historical structures that lack a counterpart in the modern world often persist as urban icons or historical references under the identity of a museum. However, preserving and transmitting these structures to the future is not limited to physical conservation measures alone. Through artistic and performative interventions, these sites can be resignified within collective memory and sustained by being experienced across generations. This study aims to examine the unique relationship between promenade performances and space within cultural heritage sites. It addresses questions such as how performing arts shape the audience's spatial perception, the role of promenade movement choreography in the experience of space, whether the space itself shapes the performance, and how the artist's spatial experience influences that of the audience. Through selected case studies, the performances are critically analyzed and discussed in terms of movement, space, and bodily relations. This research brings together perspectives from cultural heritage, performing arts, and spatial perception, aiming to contribute to interdisciplinary academic literature at the intersection of these fields. Cultural and artistic events held in public spaces and heritage sites are highly diverse; nevertheless, this study focuses specifically on the experience of space. Within this framework, the performing arts—where the artist's body itself constitutes one of the subjects—are examined, with a particular emphasis on promenade shows. Promenade shows are stage practices in which not only the artists but also the spectators engage with the space and movement, thereby challenging the conventional notion of the“stage”. Space is not merely an architectural backdrop; it is a construct imbued with meaning through bodily movement, fused with memory, and continuously reconstituted. The interaction between body and space also transforms the spectator, shifting them from the position of observer to that of an active participant. This becomes particularly evident in promenade performances: the spectator's movement through space, the experience of the show from multiple perspectives, and the transitions across spatial thresholds intensify the overall experience. As MerleauPonty emphasizes, the body is the center of the perceived world and enables the concentration of experience. Viewed through Mark Johnson's image schema theory, xxvi this suggests that the body engages with space continuously, operating simultaneously on physical and cognitive levels. The artist's body and movements resonate within the cognitive processes of the spectator, making the relationship with space a decisive factor in the audience's experience. Thus, the performing arts emerge not merely as entertainment but as a practice that forges a connection between audience and space. Performing arts, art exhibitions, and various cultural events can manifest in diverse forms within public spaces and cultural venues. In this context, cultural heritage sites are regarded not only as structures that require preservation but also as spaces in which artistic and social interaction can be revitalized. In this regard, two promenade shows are selected as case studies: Medusa's Scream (Medusa'nın Çığlığı), an immersive experience staged in Istanbul's Basilica Cistern, and Dignità Autonome di Prostituzione (D.A.d.P.) by Luciano Melchionna, performed at Sant'Elmo Castle in Naples. These performances are examined through the lenses of movement composition, the artist's body–space relationship, and audience experience. In the theoretical section of the study, the historical background of promenade performance practices and the spatial and corporeal dimensions of performing arts are discussed, alongside examples of performances staged in cultural heritage sites in both Turkey and around the world. In the case studies, a qualitative research methodology is employed, combining phenomenological approaches with participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Accordingly, the interaction between the performances and the sensory as well as architectural qualities of the sites is analyzed, together with the movement patterns of artists and spectators and their embodied spatial engagements within the structure of each performance. Drawing on Mark Johnson's image schema theory, the analysis focuses on three schemas— container, verticality, and source–path–goal—comparing them in relation to both the visitor experience and the audience's experience during the performances in the same historical setting. Through this comparative framework, the study demonstrates the ways in which these performances transform the spatial experience of the heritage sites in which they take place. In conclusion, while the experience in traditional performing arts practices is constructed primarily through scenography, acting, and narrative structure, promenade productions staged in cultural heritage sites—such as Medusa's Cry and Dignità Autonome di Prostituzione—derive their experiential depth not only from the performers' actions but also from the dynamic interplay between narrative, the body, and the unique qualities of the historical setting. For this reason, performances realized within cultural heritage environments adopt a more transparent dramaturgical approach—one that gains strength by engaging with the site rather than concealing it. The findings of the study indicate that these performances transform the spatial experience within cultural heritage sites through movement compositions that actively engage the audience's bodily presence. Within this context, three key findings emerge from the research process: first, audience movement—typically constrained in heritage sites due to safety and preservation concerns—is expanded either through the artist's body or under the artist's guidance; second, the performances are choreographed to enable spectators' movement in ways that facilitate different spatial perceptions; and third, the performances amplify the sensory layers of the space, creating a multidimensional experiential environment. Together, these findings demonstrate that xxvii promenade performances not only involve the audience physically within the space but also transform the quality of their engagement with the environment. This thesis offers an interdisciplinary perspective by repositioning the performing arts within the discipline of art history—not merely as an aesthetic or representational field, but as one shaped through bodily and spatial interactions. By examining the processes through which historical structures intersect with artistic performances, the thesis foregrounds the often overlooked notion of“the experiential value of space”within art historical scholarship. In doing so, it proposes a contemporary approach that interprets conservation and valorization processes through the lenses of emotional and embodied memory.
