Energy is one of the most fundamental factors determining the economic development, technological capacity, and living standards of modern societies. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that global demand rose to its highest historical level in 2024, reaching approximately 6.5×1020 J. Although the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas has historically supported economic growth, heavy dependence on these resources has triggered energy supply security crises and caused severe damage to ecosystems. Driven by growing global energy demand and environmental concerns, efforts to ensure energy security and support sustainable development have promoted the wider adoption of renewable energy technologies and accelerated research into advanced solar energy concepts. Third‑generation solar cells offer major advantages such as solution‑based fabrication, compatibility with flexible substrates, low cost, tunable bandgap, high absorption coefficients, and the potential for multiple exciton generation. Among these emerging technologies, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved a certified laboratory‑scale efficiency of 26.9% by independent organizations, despite being a relatively recent technology. While stability issues continue to limit large-scale applications, PSCs are widely regarded as promising candidates for commercialization. Therefore, ensuring the sustainability of solar energy conversion requires that the materials and processing technologies employed be efficient, environmentally friendly, cost‑effective, abundant, and recyclable. Using renewable energy sources while simultaneously converting waste streams into functional and low‑cost inputs is among the most impactful strategies for sustainable production. According to business‑as‑usual projections, global municipal solid waste is expected to reach 3.88 billion tons by 2050, with food and plant‑based waste accounting for the largest global share at 44%. In Türkiye, only about 13.2% of collected waste is converted into compost by municipalities, whereas agricultural and household waste streams with high potential remain largely underutilized, although their valorization for energy and material production is of considerable importance. The limited availability, toxicity, and high cost of several materials widely used in energy conversion and storage technologies have driven increasing interest in carbon‑based alternatives. Among these, biomass‑derived carbons have emerged as promising candidates due to their abundant and diverse precursors, low cost enabled by waste valorization, suitability for large-scale processing, and potential to support near‑zero‑carbon cycles. In the context of PSCs, carbon materials are particularly attractive owing to their high chemical stability, hydrophobicity, tunable work function, and ability to incorporate functional groups that facilitate defect passivation, enhance charge transport, and suppress recombination losses. Beyond these intrinsic advantages, biomass-derived carbons offer additional tunability in terms of porosity, heteroatom doping, and graphitization degree. However, studies on their use as carbon electrodes or electrode additives in PSCs are still limited, and the physicochemical properties of biomass precursors and their impact on device performance have not been comprehensively addressed. In this context, the effect of biomass precursor selection was investigated using hard‑shell waste materials with high lignocellulosic content and strong pore‑forming potential, including hazelnut shells (HS), walnut shells (WS), sunflower seed shells (SS), and peanut shells (PS), which are abundantly generated in daily life in Türkiye, easily stored, and largely underutilized. In addition, pine cones (PC), commonly found on forest floors and known to exhibit distinct carbonization behavior due to their resin content, were included to broaden the precursor diversity. Beyond lignocellulosic biomasses, mushroom‑based precursors were incorporated to examine the influence of fundamentally different biochemical structures. These included cultivated mushroom stalk (CMS), representing a readily available organic waste stream, and chaga mushroom (CM), which grows parasitically on birch trunks and is structurally distinguished by its high melanin and phenolic compound content. By evaluating diverse biomass sources, activated carbon (AC) with advanced porous structures and graphitic carbon (GC) with lower porosity but higher degrees of graphitization were produced from various organic biowastes, with the primary objective of converting waste materials into high-value carbon products and identifying the key parameters governing their final properties. Within this scope, the influence of biomass precursor selection was systematically investigated using correlation matrix analysis, and as an original contribution, a Co‑Mo bimetallic catalyst was employed for the first time to produce GC from biomass via catalytic graphitization. The synthesized AC and GC materials were subsequently integrated into n-i-p structured carbon‑electrode perovskite solar cells (C‑PSCs), which exhibit higher intrinsic stability than Au‑based devices, where they were introduced in two distinct roles as functional carbon layers (FCLs) and as antisolvent additives to evaluate their chemical, structural, morphological, and porosity‑related effects on device performance. Throughout material synthesis and device fabrication, sustainable resources and environmentally benign conditions were prioritized, enabling a closed‑loop approach in which biomass grown using solar energy is reintegrated into solar energy conversion systems. Finally, a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted for both the synthesized carbon materials and the C‑PSCs using an expanded system boundary, incorporating processes often omitted in conventional studies, such as emission formation and solution preparation, with additional materials modeled from first principles to further enhance the originality of the work. Since the final properties of biomass‑derived carbons vary significantly depending on the structural and chemical composition of the precursor, all selected biomasses were analyzed using various characterization techniques, and their effects on the carbonization process were comprehensively investigated. Proximate analysis showed that CM‑PP possessed a relatively high fixed carbon content (26.61%), whereas CMS‑PP, WS‑PP, SS‑PP, and HS‑PP exhibited high volatile matter contents (77‑82%), indicating strong pore formation potential. Low ash contents identified SS‑PP, HS‑PP, and WS‑PP as favorable precursors for GC production, while PS-PP was considered unsuitable for graphitization due to its high ash content (13.52%). According to elemental analysis, PC‑PP was characterized by a high carbon content (53.75%), while CMS‑PP exhibited a notably high N content of 3.95%. SS‑PP showed a more balanced heteroatom composition, with N and S contents of 1.19% and 0.84%, respectively. These compositional differences were further corroborated by EDS analysis, which indicated a substantially higher N content in CMS‑PP (4.65%) and showed that the high ash content of PS‑PP was primarily associated with its exceptionally high Na concentration (35.8 wt.%). Moreover, the highest P contents were observed in CMS‑PP (5.04 wt.%), followed by PC‑PP (4.08 wt.%). Based on DTG curve characteristics, SS‑PP and PS‑PP were identified as the samples with relatively higher cellulose content compared to the others. In addition, HS‑PP and WS‑PP were found to be richer in lignin, whereas PC‑PP exhibited a higher hemicellulose content. The decomposition behavior of CMS‑PP was consistent with the presence of chitin and glucan structures. However, lignin‑carbohydrate complexes were observed in CM‑PP due to its specific growth conditions. AC and GC were synthesized using H3PO4 chemical activation and catalytic graphitization, respectively, as these methods are relatively environmentally friendly and require lower energy input. Elemental analysis of the AC samples showed that biomass precursors with initially measured C contents of 28‑50% increased to 64‑75% after the activation-carbonization process, accompanied by reduced O and H contents. The samples with the highest C levels were PC‑AC, WS‑AC, and SS‑AC, while CMS‑AC was identified as the sample containing the highest N and S heteroatom dopant concentrations. FTIR spectra of all AC samples showed common peaks associated with O‑P‑O, C‑P, P‑O, C‑O, C=C, and C≡C functional groups, along with deformation modes. Raman peak deconvolution based on the 4L1G model indicated that SS‑AC and HS‑AC exhibited the highest degree of graphitization with ID1/IG ratios of 0.81 and 0.94, respectively, whereas CMS-AC showed comparatively lower graphitization. CM-AC exhibited the highest AD1 contribution (57.48%), consistent with a defect-rich carbon structure, whereas CMS-AC showed the highest AD4 contribution (24.57%), associated with ionic impurities. The relatively low fraction of ordered graphitic structures (AG, ~10‑25%) and the dominance of the D1 band (AD1: 30‑58%) indicated a high density of edge and ring defects within localized graphitic domains. XRD analysis showed that the synthesized AC samples had d(002) values ranging from 3.62 to 3.88 Å and crystallite heights (Lc) between 7.62 and 10.74 Å. The larger interlayer spacing compared to ideal graphite (>3.35 Å) confirmed the formation of more disordered structures. N2 adsorption‑desorption measurements revealed that HS‑AC exhibited the highest SBET value (2257.86 m2/g), followed by PC‑AC (2174.08 m2/g) and WS‑AC (2043.30 m2/g). According to QSDFT analysis, SS‑AC contained a higher mesopore volume, whereas PC‑AC and HS‑AC were richer in micropores. The high Smicro ratio observed for CM‑AC reflected the presence of abundant ultra‑micropores within the internal framework. Based on adsorption data supported by SEM images, porous structure formation was not observed in CMS‑AC. EDS analysis showed that P was incorporated at approximately 10‑20 wt.% in all AC samples. Spearman correlation analysis conducted to evaluate the relationships between biomass and AC characteristics revealed that moisture content, volatile matter, fixed carbon, ash content, hydrogen content, and functional groups exhibited stronger correlations with AC properties. The selection of plant‑based biomass with high lignin content, low oxygen content, and high N content was found to be critical for achieving high yield, a high degree of graphitization, controllable defect density, and good electrical conductivity. Accordingly, HS was selected as the precursor material for GC production. TG analysis indicated that the solid yield of GC samples ranged from 15.76 to 31.29 wt.%. Thermal analysis performed in dry air showed that, after purification, the carbon yield of the HS sample increased to 96.99%, and acid‑insoluble residues were detected in catalyst‑containing samples. Layered graphitic formations were observed in certain regions of the HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑4 and HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑5 samples in SEM images. HRTEM analysis revealed ordered stacking in HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑4 and turbostratic stacking in HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑5. The pronounced heat flow changes observed in DSC curves of HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑3 and HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑4, together with elongated crystalline structures in SEM images, were attributed to residual metal oxides in the structure. EDS results for HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑4 demonstrated a significant decrease in Co and Mo contents accompanied by an increase in C content, indicating a synergistic catalytic effect. Consequently, a Co:Mo ratio of 1:4 was identified as the optimum catalyst composition for carbonization. The crystallite sizes of HS‑Co and HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑4 were determined as 47.6 Å and 50.6 Å, respectively. The d(002) values decreased from 3.94 Å for HS to 3.51 Å for HS‑Co, and 3.48 Å for HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑4, indicating reduced interlayer spacing and an increased degree of graphitic ordering upon catalyst addition. In comparison with HS‑AC (Lc=8.66 Å, d(002)=3.81 Å), catalyst‑assisted samples achieved a considerably higher degree of graphitization, demonstrating that catalyst incorporation is essential, while high‑temperature treatment alone (HS‑GC) was not sufficient to reach comparable structural ordering. All GC samples produced within the thesis exhibited SBET values ranging from 196.6 to 334.9 m2/g, which are significantly higher than those of natural and synthetic graphite (~7‑10 m2/g). HS‑Co was characterized by a predominantly mesoporous structure. In contrast, HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑4 was composed of a higher micropore contribution. Raman analysis further demonstrated that the degree of graphitization of HS‑Co‑Mo‑1‑4 (ID/IG=0.876) was higher than that of the other samples. According to the 4L1G deconvolution, the ID1/IG and I2D/IG ratios of this sample were determined to be 0.96 and 0.43, respectively. However, area‑based analysis highlighted that Co primarily increased the graphitic phase fraction, while Mo contributed to improved structural ordering. The reference C‑PSC fabricated using ethyl acetate as the antisolvent in an ITO/SnO2/CH3NH3PbI3/C architecture achieved a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.96%, which increased to 10.83% upon the introduction of a P3HT hole transport layer. When AC samples derived from different biomass sources were employed as FCLs at the perovskite/carbon electrode interface, the PC‑AC‑based device reached a PCE of 13.22%, corresponding to a 32.73% improvement relative to the reference cell. This device maintained 79.35% of its initial efficiency over a 40‑day stability period. In contrast, the P3HT‑containing device exhibited the most pronounced performance degradation, with the efficiency decreasing from 10.83% to 7.61%. AC features were found to correlate more strongly with Voc, FF, and PCE, with the most significant correlations originating from chemical bonding characteristics. Among the carbon materials with different properties produced from HS‑PP, the GC‑Co sample provided the highest FCL performance, achieving a Jsc of 22.07 mA/cm2, an FF of 60.25%, and a PCE of 13.73%. It was observed that AC samples, differentiated by their porous structure and P heteroatom dopant content, primarily enhanced Voc, whereas GC samples with higher degrees of graphitization and the presence of metal catalysts led to a more pronounced increase in Jsc. These differences demonstrate that carbon materials influence device performance not only through their electrical conductivity, but also through their microstructural and optoelectronic characteristics. Reference devices fabricated under ambient conditions using anhydrous chlorobenzene as the antisolvent exhibited a maximum PCE of 7.39%. When evaluated on the basis of average PCE, the GC‑Co and GC‑Co‑Mo samples provided efficiency improvements of 78.60% and 72.80%, respectively, compared to the reference devices. In this context, the conversion of an antisolvent exhibiting low efficiency under ambient conditions into high‑performance C‑PSCs through carbon modification represents one of the most notable outcomes of this study. For PSCs incorporating both FCLs and antisolvents with carbon additive, stability tests indicated that performance degradation was primarily governed by changes in the FF parameter. While the reference PSC prepared with ethyl acetate exhibited a 6.59% increase relative to its initial efficiency, the use of chlorobenzene as the antisolvent resulted in an efficiency loss of 25.69%. In the GC‑Co FCL‑based PSC, 77.40% of the initial efficiency was retained relative to the first day, whereas the device incorporating AC as an antisolvent additive showed the highest stability, retaining 86.36% of its initial performance. When the FCL and antisolvent strategies were evaluated together, carbon materials integrated as interlayers predominantly affected performance metrics related to charge carrier transport and interfacial behavior, such as Voc and Jsc. In contrast, when employed as antisolvent additives, stronger correlations were observed with parameters sensitive to film formation and morphological integrity, particularly FF. This overall comparison suggests that the two approaches influence the perovskite layer through different mechanisms and that the role of carbon materials in determining device performance is sensitive not only to their composition, but also to the stage at which they are incorporated into the device. LCA of the biocarbon materials and PSCs produced within the thesis was conducted using functional units of 1 kg and 1 m2, respectively, covering stages from raw material acquisition to the use phase. The life cycle inventory (LCI) was constructed based on laboratory practices, literature data, and information obtained from relevant equipment manufacturers. The life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) was performed using the ReCiPe 2016 impact assessment method, and analyses were carried out using SimaPro 10.2.0.1 software. Among the biocarbons, GC exhibited the lowest overall environmental and human health impacts and even showed net environmental benefits in several impact categories due to waste valorization, while AC displayed the lowest global warming potential. In contrast, catalytic graphitization routes, particularly for GC‑Co‑Mo, resulted in higher environmental burdens because of additional processing steps, catalyst‑related emissions, and solid waste generation. Normalized results indicated that biocarbon production was primarily associated with human health impacts. For PSCs, FCLs consistently exhibited the lowest environmental impacts among all device components, followed by carbon electrodes. In contrast, the SnO2 layer dominated most impact categories, while Ag contacts were responsible for significant ecotoxicity‑related burdens. Overall, these results demonstrate that biowaste‑derived FCLs provide clear sustainability advantages over conventional hole transport layers reinforcing the environmental relevance of carbon-based device architectures. Cumulative energy demand (CED) analysis showed that the SnO2 layer accounted for the highest energy consumption (34%), with fossil‑based energy dominating across all layers (80.2%). The lowest EPBT value (0.49 years) was obtained for PSCs including GC-Co FCLs, while the highest EPBT (0.85 years) was observed for reference devices fabricated using chlorobenzene antisolvent. Scenario analysis for industrial scale processing indicated that adapting energy‑ and material‑intensive steps such as spin coating, antisolvent usage, and solution preparation to industrial conditions reduced the CED value by 47%, from 531.89 MJ (laboratory scale) to 281.53 MJ. These results suggest that replacing laboratory scale methods with modern synthesis techniques can significantly improve energy efficiency and overall environmental performance. The findings of the LCA demonstrate that the developed C‑PSCs exhibit strong potential as sustainable candidates aligned with low carbon footprint, resource efficiency, and circular economy goals.
